I have a 1997 Nissan Hardbody and a few days back, my engine decided to start rattling. It is not the valves, but it could be a loose heat shield? The rattling only occurs when idling, it goes away once the accelerator is pressed. I know you can only guess without actually looking at it, but any input would be great! thanks.

As said above, those engines are prone to timing chain guide failure resulting in chain rattle.

check heat shield on exhaust, mine had a broken bolt and rattled at idle until I replaced bolt, but reverend is right with miles the chain guides do that. Mine does it at start up for 5 seconds then quits. Pop hood and try to isolate the noise area, if it is in front probably chain guides, but maybe it is something else that is loose on the outside if you are LUCKY.

Are chain guides an easy replace? I'm sure i can find HOW in my Hanes manual - but has anyone has experience with this? It looks like the chain guides are going to be around $30-$40, so i guess it won't put me back too far if this isn't the problem.

WRONG! That is information for a KA24DE not a KA24E.

You need to read this instead.
