I got an 2003 Xterra XE, its in very nice shape but it has couple of issues.

1. It is making sound in the back when going over a hump or bumpy road. I checked under it and found that spare tire was bit losse and there is an extra chain hanging with the spare tire. I tapped that extra chain and tighten the spare tire and back number plate but the noise is still there. Please help.

2. The front grille is kind a losse and making some noise. I found that the plastic screw type clips which hold this plastic grill are loose. I tried to took them out and tight them but I don't know how to take them out and put them back. Could anyone can help me on that.

Thanks.

I also have a 2003 xterra XE and i have the same problem. I am not positive but i believe there is something inside that tailgate that rattles around.

2 things occur with rear end noise.

The spare tire rests on 2 stamped plates that are bolted to the frame with a pair of small10mm bolts. These can come loose and will allow your spare tire to rock and wiggle. Remove the spare tire, unbolt the 2 plates and get some rubber matting or old bicycle inner tube rubber and make some thin shims to fit in between the frame and the stamped plates. This will reduce most of the noise.

Second: If you still have your rear sway bar in place the small ball joints on the links are either loose or worn. Check the attachment points at the frame brackets near the rear inner wheel wells and the link ends on the sway bar itself. The rubber bushings on the rear sway bar may also be worn out.
