my rear brakes, actually just the driver side rear brake has this really annoying noise that comes from it just about all the time. just started recently. the pads and rotors look ok. sounds kind of like metal against metal, almost a grinding sound...not really a squeal.

when i'm driving down the road and they start making that noise, if i pull the e-brake up a little it stops making the noise for a while, but it always comes back.

i'm just wondering what this could be, it's so annoying and i know i'm annoying other drivers around me too. ANY advice is appreciated! :help

check for a rock or something stuck between the backing plate and the rotor. when you look at your brakes be sure to look at both pads not just one. bad calipers can make only one pad wear.

Yeah, only one of the two pads has the sqeak device, but I expect it is more than just worn pads because it does it while you are driving. Another thing you could check that happened on my car was that on my back left caliper the inside pad was installed crooked. There are these little metal pins on the back of the brake pad itself that NEED to be aligned with the slots on the caliper piston itself. Mine weren't causing the pad to be pushed against the rotor crooked. I was lucky though because the side of the pad with the squeak making metal thingy was worn before the otherside. What I'm wondering is that if the pad was tipped the other way maybe the pad could be worn all the way to the pad backing plate without squeaking causing the metal to metal noise you mentioned. I also once had a problem with the dust shield thing right behind the rotor coming in contact with the rotor because it was slightly bent causing a metal to metal but this doesn't sound like your problem. Just bent it back with a little hand pressure and all better.
