Anyone know the size for the nut on the axle? 32mm is too small and I'm guessing it 38?

So last night I try to get a head start on a brake job/tune up (just jacking up the car, taking the wheels off and pulling parts out the garage). After two months of raining (almost constantly) it seems the studs and lugs rusted together, causing me to snap a stud and strip two lug nuts.

Pay 5 bucks to get the lug nuts off and start on the job. Of couse I'm missing a couple of sockets, and the socket for the axle (which is why I preceded this story with that question). Hopefully I'll be able to finish up tomorrow.

Does it take anyone else extremely long to work on their car...having everything that can go wrong happen?

It is a 36mm. You shouldn't need to take the hub off to get the rotor off or to install new studs.

oh my god man I know what you're talking about... I changed the belts on my car yesterday, and I ended up breaking the head off of the tension bolt for the power steering pulley... if you've changed your belts you know what I'm talking about.. The things were never changed before I guess so the bugger was rused on like crazy. I ended up ripping the head off and taking the whole thing out to soak it in liquid wrench. After a whole night of soaking I was able to get it out, and good thing too-- I called NISSAN to find out how much the replacement part was... friggin $75!!! Arrugh!

Took me forever to find a replacement bolt, too... trust me- for some reason metric class 8 with 1.00 thread pitches are friggin IMPOSSIBLE to find in the right length (about 3")... pick some up in advance if you see them someplace...

Heh so yeah, sometimes it can be a real pain in the *** working on our cars... especially if it hasnt been treated right before...

DAY F***ING TWO:

Started early. Didn't have many tools needed. Got the front brakes all done. Got the axle socket. Problems....

Can't get the rear right caliper piston to retract. Could this mean it's seized? I could barely get the stupid tool to hold...kept slipping out...pliers didn't work...I think we got a whole two rotations out of it. The driver's rear "screwed" back down fine in about 2 mins.

I know you don't need to take the hub off to change the rotors, you do however have to take the nut to the axle off...I saw nothing else holding the rear rotor on, and it wasn't coming off (caliper was already totally removed). I also don't really want to punch the broken stud out through the rotor....with my luck I'll screw it up.

Gonna go at all this crap again when my friend gets off of work...only this time we'll have beer, so everything will go a lot smoother.

Any suggestions, comments, or diagnosis on the caliper would be appreciated.

Broken so far:2 stripped lug nuts1 snapped wheel stud1 broken ratchet1 rear caliper (possible)

the rotor and hub are not one piece. The rear rotors come off just like the front rotors. If it is all rusted together just get your hand sledge and hit the rotor right between the studs and it will break it loose. If you are a bad shot put the lug nuts back on first so you don't mess up the threads.

As for the caliper. Try getting it to go back with the bleeder unscrewed. IF the caliper was locked up one of two things would happen: the brakes would be stuck on and you would smell that overheating them, or it would be stuck off and the pads wouldn't wear at all on that side of the vehicle.

I know the rear rotors weren't one piece with the hubs, but they are all rusted together and won't budge one bit...I was trying to hit it from the backside of the rotor to knock them loose, but didn't have enough room. Thanks for the tip, I'll smack it right between the eyes....studs. Also thanks for the bleeder tip, neither my friend or I thought of it. I consider myself intellectual, but sometimes I'm downright dumb.
