Well here we go again. I picked up a motor on Monday, a real piece of crap. The guy I got it from had it sitting in the grass in his back yard, covered with a tarp. No oil pan attached, so the whole crank area was filled with water. Rotating assembly is seized of course... safe to say I got myself a charity case. Cheap though!

Started cleaning things up today:

Everything gets soaked in PB blaster.

...Everything

My engine bay is looking pretty sad as well. I pretty much ripped the motor right out of it, and my haste shows a little bit. Still, everything is going to get stripped down this time, reorganized nicely since now I know where everything is going to go ahead of time:

Anyways so thats step 1. Stand by for steps 2-193843... you all know I'm picture happy so safe to say there will documentation of just about every single step. I'll try to make it as helpful as possible, so if there are any questions or whatever- shoot!

Hahah yeah, I wanted to show off my skillz haha. That stuff sprays pretty far-- I think next I'll take a pic of me spraying the engine from across the garage. Why not, right?

EDIT: you guys like how my garage his held up by posts in the middle which are sitting on a log and a brick? haha way to protect my investment, throw everything in a garage thats seriously ABOUT to fall down. Blame my father for the engineering though, I had nothing to do with that!

LOL yeahh they worry me sometimes, but theyve been there for 15+ years now. Theyre not part of the original design of the garage, just.. "aftermarket" additions, if you will. I guess the main support beams were starting to sag and this was the "solution."

50 bucks for the complete engine ...although considering the condition, I may have even overpaid slightly...

ahhh, the familiar look of the empty 240 engine bay, brings back memories. Good luck on it this time around, I regret getting rid of my KA after it blew.

Good luck and don't get too frustrated. Don't touch the poles.

looks fun....is it easy to ripp apart a motor? i have a blown motor that i wanna take apart for fun but i hope i can learn something instead of just ripping everything apart. your going to use that dirty motor though? looks like you can basically use any motor if your going to rebuild it? as long as nothing is broken right?

Yeah, pulling apart a motor is a pretty simple process, especially if you dont plan on putting it back together haha. Pulling a motor apart is, I think, one of the best ways to learn about engines and see for yourself exactly how they work. If you have a spare motor, I really reccomend you give it a shot!

The motor looks dirty now, but the important areas (crank journals, the block itself, girdle) are all in good condition. That is really all I need because the cyls will be rebored to a fresh wall, the rods, pistons, bearings, etc replaced, crank micropolished and balanced, the entire assembly including the block hot-tanked and painted, etc etc etc. It doesnt matter that it had water in it, as long as the integrity of the block and crank remains.

This S13 will never be NA again . I have a beater car for the winter, so basically I'll drive that, and build this car back up over the winter. I was hoping to have everything done before it snows again, but looking at how much work I have to do (and money to spend!), I think I'm better off taking my time and making it the winter project.

fiz how long did it take you to take out the motor? how long would you estimate it should take to swap IN a motor? are there lots of little things you must know to hook up or is it a lot of common sense?
