I couldn't find any thread regarding this build so I figured I'd share mine. This is my first attempt for this type of build but all in all it came out decent. All works as I had hoped and apps starts and stops when the tablet is docked/undocked. It's my hope that more people tackle this kind of build so that we can all help each other.

I made a fiberglass mould of the Nexus7 and secured it to a dash kit for my 09 a/c. This pic is a rough fitting, I used a dremel to trim down the mould and get the overall shape I wanted.

Image

I then used bondo and body worked it on the dash kit. Lots of sanding, more bondo and more sanding. Used an 80 grit sandpaper to get an overall shape all the way to 1000 grit for the final shape. I still had pits but not many and filled them with thin layers of bondo to even out the entire surface.

Image

This pic is after a few layers of high build primer to further reveal any imperfections. After smoothing it all out I laid down 5 coats of black automotive paint. It kind of gives it a matte finish I would say.

Image

This step was to test fit the dash piece. It was snug but flush all the way around and I was satisfied with the overall look. I was really just figuring things out as I went. The tablet charges when docked and the audio is clear. I have the audio going into an eq for further tuning, sounds awesome!

Image

This is the final fitting and install of the dash piece. Everything works and I used an app off the Play Store to automate certain triggers I set up when the tablet is docked and undocked. As I said the audio is sent to an eq for processing and out to the amp. This is a real diy as all materials to make the dash piece was bought from Walmart.

Care to tell more about the audio side? Are you using a DAC or just the headphone output of the nexus?

Damn! Really nice clean job. How long did it take you start to finish?

No DAC, the audio is pulled off the audio jack of the nexus. I used a right-angle 3.5mm jack adapter so I can have more room to somewhat center the nexus; a regular straight plug wouldn't allow this. Then used a 3.5mm to rca audio cable to output to a 7-band eq that's rated to provide additional 7 volts. I tweak the audio as I see fit here and output to a 4-channel amp. I'm currently using my stock Bose speakers until I get my coaxials in. That's pretty much it and everything else that would be added such as the speakers, sub and additional amp would be a typical install. One thing to be concerned about I would say is a ground loop. I soldered, crimped & shrink tubed all my connections to factory grounds which this car has a lot of.

Thanks. This actually took me almost three months I would say only because I would work on it one day and not touch it for a week or two..or three. I'm guessing if I had worked on it daily then maybe a week, two weeks at the most. It was a very fun build and I learned a lot throughout the whole process. My next attempt will definitely be better for sure (wife is wanting me to build one for her SUV). If this was a build for someone else then it would not take me more than 2 weeks.

This is a pic of the eq install, part of it anyway. I grabbed the 12-volt constant and remote turn-on power directly from the factory radio harness using a testlight and a basic multimeter (Walmart) to ensure correct voltage since I'm not using a metra harness. It's worth mentioning that I fused the 12-volt constant just in case. 12 gauge wire (Walmart) was used to power and ground the eq.

The eq powers up in the "Accessory" and "On" position, powers off during crank then turns back on when the engine starts.
I hope to make a video to post on here, hopefully...

Very very cool man. I've thought about doing this eventually with an iPod mini because my appradio will eventually be incompatible with new iOS technologies. FYI, you'll get much better sound quality with an aftermarket digital audio converter but I'm sure it sounds great already. Nice work!

Thanks! For this particular install the eq offered 7 bands for tweeking which is more than enough for me right now; 7-volt preout doesn't hurt either hehe...it gives me separate controls over each band, sub volume, fader and a separate aux-in w/ aux-in volume knob for fun...

Thanks! Putting an N7 where the storage compartment is may require a bit more work but it's not impossible. I just don't listen enough to radio stations now to want to keep the factory radio. In this build I could always have it since they all pretty much live stream their broadcasts and everything that was done can be undone at any time. :dblthumb:

Coming from a guy who has no idea how to do this stuff but with little experience in electronic work, this is truly one of the most innovative and impressive ideas to come across this board. Kudos to you good sir!

Thanks! I would say the hardest part of the build was getting it started. It was a lot to take on at least for me but it came out just how I wanted it to.

Nice job, for those interested, here's a video with a tutorial on how to install these to work like a headunit.

Very nice and decent! :dblthumb:

But, we actually have an Android head unit for the Altima, available here in the UAE

It even comes with a backup camera, GPS and of course Bluetooth... etc

It costs around $550 WITH Installation :chuckle:

I'm not sure what it's called or its model, but I'll go to the shop and get more info.
I'll update you ASAP :)

That's awesome!! The android based head units I've seen here in the US is too slow for me. They lack the processing power of a quad core like the N7. It would be nice if the ones you guys have there are not like the android based headunits here in the US...

Wonder if there is a video demo'ing this hu. I'd like to see the seemlesness this would offer with regards to processing. My goal was to get the experience of a smooth transitioning tablet which at this time no hu offer, not yet anyway. This was not an option for me as I wanted an actual tablet as my hu.

Thank you Mr.HacKeR!!! i'm going to take a look into getting one of these! i would be all up for doing a build like you n8radamus, but time, money, and being able to go back to stock in minutes is just too appealing. so in short, i'm lazy. Cheers

Yep to each his/her own. I took on the build because I've been doing the typical hu install since 1999 and let me tell you that to put this car back to stock is faster than any hu install and a lot more affordable as well. This route also offers the best chance to stay updated due to the apps being created everyday. It just made more sense for me right now since I'm "economically" challenged. Lol! ANd it looks hella sick!!!!
