I've been kind of excited and naive about my new 91 G50. It all came into focus last night when I was driving home at around 2am and the engine started to sound like a crackhead with a cowbell, then silence. I checked the oil this morning on the side of the road where it is still sitting and it was about half way up the dipstick and a creamy light consistency. Dont ask if i overfilled the oil cuz i didn't. wow, i haven't been this devestated in a while...

Ouch, sounds like a bad HG. You'll be pulling the motor out and getting the head and block milled I would imagine....

Boy, my first question exactly. Why early (1990-1993) even start their engines without first confirming the state of the cahin guides is beyond me. Most stress is on the initial cold crank.

Do they not read the Articles Forum?

I feel for ya Kirby and hope your able to get the car back on the road again soon...

Alot of people don't know much about the car when they buy it, I know I didn't. This website has been an incredible fountain of knowledge and has saved me thousands of dollars (even though I now have one of the largest collections of MAF's in the free world). I just really liked the car and it's reputation and just got lucky that the car I bought didn't have the chain guide problems, just some bad knock sensors.

Starting the engine alone places alot of load on the guides ... so every start is a risk .

Once I discovered this as an issue, I had my car sit for 15 months until I got up the guts to replace it all myself- all plenum hoses, timing chains AND guides, oil pump and chain, vallve covers, knock sensors, etcetc. But for 15 months she just sat there mocking me... I wouldn't start it.

Once I did open it up, guess what? Broken guides- just luck, they cracked but the chain hadn't broken (yet) very similar to the pics here of the project in Iowa (?I think)

Do it, or just start shopping for a spare engine now...

There are plenty of previous posts like Ardvarkus.

Please, all you 1990-1993 G50 newbies, verify your chain guides before starting your engines again.

Hey man, would bad knock sensors warrant getting a new engine,a service tech told me that the bad knock sensors on my g50 caused a blown rod in the engine and lost compression, she wont start and has been parked for months while im saving up for a engine

Doubtful... When the knock sensors are bad the ECU retards the timing advance as much as possible - so you're running in the most engine-protective mode possible. Have you been to T3? That's what I'd do - Byron should be able to diagnose it to make sure your "no compression" isn't something simple like the engine flooded from a cold startup that didn't run long enough to burn off the extra fuel.

which is why you're not suppose to turn off your car! change oil as you fill up at the same time. Just run it until the black turns to new oil color.
