I need to bypass or reset my 1990 Q45's OEM anti-theft system so that I may start it, get it home, and get it out of the parking lot of the business that it has been sitting in (unlocked) since Saturday evening.

Windows were down, I reached in and locked the car on the driver's side, then on coming back to the car, reached into the passenger side to open the door for my wife (maybe chivalry should die), unlocking the passenger lock, opening the door, and bingo, alarm goes off, ignition is blocked, and Q ain't going anywhere. Fortunately, we were at a small family-owned business out in the country, and they lock the lot up after 8pm. Very nice and understanding folks, but I'm sure they would love to see the car out of one of their prime parking spaces.

Here's the wrinkle: I only have 1 key, and it only works for the ignition. In other words, I have no key to lock and unlock the door locks, and thereby reset or turn off the alarm.

This car is a theft recovery, hence no door key.

I've tried removing the positive, negative, and both battery cables to no avail. Battery has plenty of juice, just need to reset the system somehow without using the door lock.

Last thing the in world I want to do is blow the money I've been saving for engine maintenance to go to a tow and dealer-installed locks. Plan was to get a remote alarm/locking system, just procrastinated too long

Anybody know what to do in this situation?

Many, many Thanks in advance,JEC

The brain for your alarm is located above the glove compartment. It's a small box (don't disconnect the ABS computer instead). It should have some sort of sticker on it that says "anti-theft." This might return the starter kill relay to the closed position and let you turn the car back on.

I may be wrong, but I think you can buy a remote from eBay, and program it for your car. This would give your the ability to lock & unlock the doors, open the trunk, silence and set the alarm, as well as a panic button.

You can take your serial number to the local Infiniti dealership, to determine the correct FCC code for the remote you need. They can sell you a new remote, but it is over $100. Once you have this code, spend some time on eBay. I got a second remote for my 1994 Q45 for $36.00 You might have to aske for the FCC ID number. It is printed on the back of all Infiniti and Nissan remotes. Just because it may fit a 1990 Q, it may not be the correct FCC code. My local dealership made a copy of the programming instructions for me, and in 10 minuttes, I had a good working remote as a back-up.

You can also get blank master keys off of eBay. You will have to find someone to cut it, though.

Go to the red "Search" button, for keys and remote, and programming. You can find old threads, with contacts for keys, and programming instructions. You might even find someone in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum, with a spare remote they might sell.

Good luck!

Well, in that case. "Never mind."

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, in the '94 Q45.

I think the dealer can cut a new door key from the VIN #.

Just have the dealership give you the name and address of the previous owner, and offer them $100 for their old keys.

If it was my old car, I would go for that deal.

911, Heath, Jeff:

Thanks again for everyone's input. I'm crossing my fingers and heading out after work to try the "brain-next-to-the-glovebox" route. I'll post back with what happens.

Previous owner only had the one ignition key, which I now have. Didn't bother to tell me over the phone about that little detail. We flew to Minneapolis, then he tells me about not being able to lock the car. Should've walked; but I already had $600 invested in getting there, and I liked the car itself.

Dealer has not responded to my email inquiry about having a key cut. I do recall something about $190 to have the key cut from the VIN in Japan and shipped (ten days); but what if these are not the original door locks? Maybe dealer would have that info in their records, if they still exist.

Like I said, love the car, will never buy another "sight-unseen, no records" bargain again.

The adventure continues...:rolleyes

Try Scottsdale Infiniti parts, you might have to fax your title and registration to prove ownership. Those guys will have the answer, emailing people is a waste of time use the 800#

Well, I now know quite a bit more about the insides of an early Q45 dash! Lots of stuff. Looks like the control room of a nuclear submarine.

Long story short, I got the car started and home. Thanks again Heath!

Found the relay, unplugged it, replugged it, and the system started "clicking" like it was still armed (I have unplugged the alarm horn and removed a headlight fuse to keep them from draining the battery, and sheer annoyance.) Replugged it, stuck the key in the ignition, and she fired right up. Sweating bullets as the tach, gas, and temp gauge were going haywire, while the speedo was fine. Got it home, and plan to put everything back together this evening.

Once the glovebox itself is removed, only real obstacles are a very hefty structural bar running the width of the under-dash and an amp that requires total removal to see the anti-theft relay. Has the sticker on it too. Glad it wasn't printed in Japanese!
