If you've been keeping up with my recent postings, you know I recently received a turbo rebuild kit for the T-25. Originally I was gonna send it to a shop in town to get rebuilt, but someone convinced me I could do it myself. I did some research, and it looked fairly easy. This turbo has been a b1tch to work on the moment I sent the lift sailing skywards with my car balanced on it. None of the oil and cooling fittings wanted to work with me, the elbow nuts had rust welded on so tight, that we had to use a spline bit to bite into one of the nuts to get it to break loose. The housing bolts didn't want to come loose from the turbine housing, and I have learned that some mastermind of pure evil is the person who invented lock tabs for the manifold bolts.

Now onto the real thread! I pulled the turbo apart and removed the bearings and snap rings. It should look like this. Starting at the bottom, it should be journal bearing, snap ring, snap ring, journal bearing, snap ring, thurst bearing/washer and seal washer.

Instead it looked like this when I pulled it apart. Snap ring, journal bearing, snap ring, thrust bearing/washer, seal washer.

Best I can tell is that the lower journal snap ring came unseated, allowing the journal bearing to shift around. When I pulled the shaft, the bearing fell into the oil return area so I missed it until I began cleaning the CHRA. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the snap ring, so who knows where it went. It didn't cause any lubrication failures, so I'm not going to worry about it.

It's all back together now. Thankfully. We didn't have any internal snap ring pliers to get the snap rings in, but we managed by using picks and very small screwdrivers.

it's running good. I've got the boost turned down on it, but tomorrow I'm gonna go ahead and get boost happy again.

Total time was right under 20 hours of work

Now i know that repairing my t25 wouldnt be for me b/c i dont even work at my job 20 hours a week let alone rip apart a turbo. Doing that would get me so fustrated that i would have a damm heart attack.

that also includes the process of pulling the turbo out and reinstalling it. We started sunday morning around 10 or so, finished up at 7 or so that evening, and then went back in at 8:30 the next morning, but didn't get started till 10 (cleaning and moving cars and stuff). Finally fired the car back up at 6:30.

Tha actual rebuild of the turbo took 2 to 3 hours. Once I got underway I had the CHRA reassembled, the housings on, and the manifold and lines were reinstalled before lunch.

one of the big annoyances I had was the exhaust turbine housing mount bolts were fawked. I had to retap the threads in the housing and then run a die down the bolts. Two of the bolts were screwed up so much that the die didn't help much. Thankfully there were two extra bolts from an extra T25 laying around.

And the snap rings sucked hardcore. If we had had the proper set of snap ring pliers, it would have been easy, but as it stood, we used a screw driver to push them down into the housing, then used some picks to rotate it around and slide into the ring grooves.

Also, we didn't have a torque wrench that read inch/pounds, and the compressor wheel nut is supposed to be tightened to 18-20 in/lbs. I tightened it as well as I could, so I hope that works ^^

this rebuild was mainly to help keep the turbo running till I can afford an upgrade.
