when starting their PF that sounds like it should be belts but isnt. Local shadetree mechanic was stumped and I am trying to avoid the dealer. 2001 3.5 V6Thank

How are you sure it's not the belts? Replaced them and tensioned them to spec? If it's not the belts, I'd check your tensioners to make sure one of them isn't fried. Past that, I'd venture vacuum leak.

6, thanks for the feedback. I have made an "a**"umption that my shadetree guy knows what he was talking about when he said belts were good. That aside. I got some additional feedback that pointed toward vacuum leak as well which makes me think that is a good possibility and I will investigate that option immediately. If not one of these 2 options, is the next place a metal on metal/bearing situation?Thanks againBrian

Could be a number of things..water pumps squeal right before they go (How many miles are on your rig?) idler and tensioner pulleys will do the same if the internal bearings are jacked. Is this "whistle" when you start up and is especially bad when it's cold or wet (i.e. just rained)? Not so bad when warm or after a hot start?
