I would like to replace my stock speakers on my 2008 G35. I was looking at component speakers with an amp. The first installer I spoke to said that I could not use an amp with the stock radio in this car and I was better off just putting in a couple of two way speakers in the doors, leave the existing tweeters in as component tweeters won't fit anyway.

Is this true? He has no reason to steer me this way, he makes less money with what he is suggesting, but I won't get as good a system. Is he just being lazy?

I wouldn't call it lazy, I would call it "not knowing what you're talking about."

If this guy had any reputation or even followed the industry, he would know that you could use an aftermarket amp with your stock stereo. He would also know you could install tweeters.

Virtually all newer aftermarket amps accept a high-level input, meaning you can use speaker wire to hook it up instead of RCAs.

The component tweeters would not fit? I think it is a matter of what component speaker we are speaking about since I install many and not found this to be an issue on any of them. Infinity's for example are smaller in diameter than many stock ones I have encountered and I have made adapters out of plastic (the bottom out of flower pots) for mounting.

On the other hand you need to do an impedance match on the speakers depending on what you do replace them with. Easier to do using aftermarket amps with aftermarket speakers in many cases.

Still not sure of what the stock amp uses for signal input, but it may be possible to replace it with one that would accept the same input. Speaker level inputs will work but I would avoid that if possible as you may inherit the deficiencies of the stock amp, some of which you may not want. It may be possible to use one of the many pre-amps available to tie the stock amps input to the aftermarkets input. It is also very easy to roll your own as well if necessary.

Here are two links that may be worth a follow up:

The first one speaks of the input to the stock amp as being fed by low level outputs for the stock HU. I haven't confirmed this but it would certainly make the job fairly straight forward.

The second one has some interesting pictures of a setup.

If replacing the amp, I would however replace the speaker wires if they are like anything in other projects I have worked on.

One problem I do have with my 08 with everything stock is that the sound deadening in the doors seem to need some work. This issue would most likely be amplified with any changes and therefore worth you while to address at the same time as the speaker changes.

Oh and also, two-way coaxs FTL. Get a good component set. I myself just bought a pair of 6.5" Polk Audio db components, 40% off at your nearest bankrupt Circuit City. Now I just need a 2nd pair and I can start the upgrade of my speakers.

There would be no point in having a coax and a tweeter in the same door. Stupid. You'll get much better sound with a mid-range woofer and a tweeter from a component setup.

My advice, find another stereo shop and don't deal with this guy. He's a luney.

Thank you all for your input. It didn't make much sense.

This is part of a present, I have to buy the speakers at Best Buy so I am somewhat limited. It looks like I am going with either Alpine R type or Infinity Kappa Perfects. Beyond personal preference do any of you have any advise on which speakers I should go with?
