Taken from Wiki,"Socket AM3, a.k.a. Phenom Fx, is a CPU socket designed by AMD for desktop processors, including the performance, mainstream and value segments. It has an expected release in late 2008, as a replacement for Socket AM2/AM2+. Socket AM3 will be able to run either DDR2 or DDR3 SDRAM memory [1], but not both on the same motherboard; DDR3 runs at higher clock frequencies while drawing less power than DDR2 memory, however it is currently much more expensive.

AMD has confirmed that AM3 processors will work on AM2 motherboards. However, AM2 processors will not work on AM3 motherboards because AM2 processors lack the DDR3 memory controller. AM3 processors will support both DDR2 and DDR3 memory, but not both on the same motherboard. Therefore, users of Socket AM2 motherboards will be able to upgrade to AM3 processors, without replacing the motherboard or memory.

Socket AM3 is assumed to be introduced with AMD's next generation processors based on the 45 nm fabrication process that will be release in December 2008 (processor only), and the full AM3 platform (processor & motherboards) on January 11, 2009."

Hmm, i'm not finding any currently produced AM2 boards with DDR3 support. I may just wait a few months before building my computer, or at the very lest, buy a cheap mobo with athlon 5000 processor, then dump it once the new stuff comes out.

Your exerpt just said that AM2 doesn't have support for DDR3.

Im gonna grab an AM2+ board, run DDR2, and grab an AM3 Phemon... That will tide me over for 6 months to a year, at least until the 2nd-3rd gen AM3 mobo's come out and have worked out most of the kinks...

You're right, but think about it a bit more. If the Mobo supports DDR3, you could buy an AM2 processor and DDR2, then once AM3 processors come out, dump the CPU and the ram, but keep your existing Mobo. See? Now you have an AM3 CPU and DDR3 ram, without having to buy another mobo.

That's probably a better idea. Build an Athlon X2 based system, then upgrade later. I can take all of my old guts and put them in my old computer at my parents house.
