Hi,

I just picked up an 09 Versa 1.8 S HB. I looked under the car today and saw a lot of gray coating, which is great, but also a long streak of "rusty" brownish-orange stuff going from front to back, near the center. It looks like they missed that part !! I hope I am wrong. How could they "miss" something so easy, right? I rubbed my finger along the "rusty" part, and nothing showed up on my finger. It didn't feel rusty, but looks rusty, and not gray like the other parts of the underbody.

Also, the exhaust system is already rusting. I assume the car was built in 08, and has been sitting around on who knows how many lots until I bought it. It may have been test driven during the winter of 08-09, on salty roads, and not washed underneath. Who knows? I bought it in Pa. It had 190 miles on it when I bought it.

Anyone else have this "rusty" looking streak on his/her underbody ?

BTW, I have 1,000 miles on her now, and all is well other than this possible "rust".

Thanks

The bodies go through a coating before they are painted and undercoating applied, so the chances that you have rust on the body are little. I'd like to see a picture, but most things on the body are covered so they won't rust. I could see the exhaust getting a little rust over time at the weld joints, but nothing major enough to worry about.

Would like to see a pic as well. Panels and underbody are galvanized steel so there shouldn't be any rust this early if at all.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to get a pic this weekend.

I found another 09 Versa at a dealer lot, and looked under it, and lo and behold, it had the same orangey-brown streak going from front to back, in the center. It also had rust on some suspension part (spring joint?) , just like mine does, but it had no rust on the brake line at all. Mine has rust on the metal connector part in the brake line.

A salesman there said the orangey streak is not corrosion, nothing to worry about.

Looked under a Murano. No orange streak, no rust anywhere.

One day I was washing my white 09 Versa HB. At the lower front of the drivers door I found a rust spot about the size of a nickle. Took it to the dealer that day. They took pictures of it and said they would need to check with Nissan before they could fix it. It took about a week and a half to get an answer. It was fixed with no problem. And no cost to me. Just a PIA. Most of the time I keep a car 10 yrs or more. I hope I don't have any more rust!!!

Just an update : I took the 09 V HB into the dealer and the service manager looked at the exhaust and saw the surface rust. He said it was not unusual.

the rusty exhaust is common. I coated mine with high heat black paint.
