Am I running too hot? Should I add an oil cooler?

Alright, I decided to go for a pretty long drive today since I just finished up a little maintenance. I'd say I was about 30mins in when things started to heat up. Mind you I live in Phoenix and it was about 105 out today, and sunny.

Anyways, my car peaked at 230 before I parked it and let it sit for a few mins. The A/C had been off the whole time I'm driving it. My HKS fan controller was warning me and I double checked my Power FC Commander to see if I was running that hot.

Mods:
Redtop SR
S15 Turbo @ 1ish bar
Power FC
Dual Flex-A-Lite fans with HKS fan controller
Koyo Radiator
Vented Hood

On a not so hot day, the car constantly runs around 200 all the time. The fan controller is set to kick in a 200 degrees and does a good job. I'm pondering adding an oil cooler or maybe a bigger pan. It's just so effing hot here and my car is so low that I feel like it just absorbs the heat.....

Ideas? Some cheaper options would be a cooling panel and even some water squirters like Razi on here did..

Umm... 105 is hot as hell, I would blow my brains out living in those conditions. But still, once it hits 205F that's just about as hot as you want it to get while driving. Normal operating temps is at around 175 F to 200 MAX.

You peaked to 230. . . That's pretty severe. Look into putting your clutch fan/shroud back on. That is the most efficient way to cool your SR, screw flex-a-lite's. If you don't want to do that, then get an oil cooler.

Also, try setting the fan controller to 190 F.

You're oil temps are getting this high?

Regardless, you want oil/water temps to be about the same. You don't want to see 230 when driving around. 180-200 is okay, I'll see upwards to 215 or so when at drift events.

Don't move any further south its been 100+ for the last month. I would definitely get that clutch fan back on. You look at 700-800hp + Supras with the stock shroud and fan so it is the most efficient way of keeping the Sr engine cool. I tried Hayden fans they work but not efficiently. When I get her running again, I'm putting that fan back on. Get an oil cooler immediately. A lot of people miss this cheap mod that can keep oil temps down and possibly from destroying your engine's bearings.

You can add an oil cooler, but there's a hundred other things you need to look at in the meantime.

Throwing parts at a car doesn't fix problems.

Make sure all air coming into the front of the car is going through the radiator. This is where a cooling panel and some weatherstripping and some sheet metal comes in handy. I'll bet that's 90% of the problem.

Likewise, make sure the fans are pulling air through the radiator, not from around the sides. Shroud should fit closely to the fan blades.

Cooling system flush, then fill with a bottle of Water Wetter, a quart of coolant, and the rest distilled (not tap) water.

New rad cap and thermostat. Cheap insurance. Believe it or not, they wear out.

Clean the radiator fins. Pressure wash from the inside out, and make sure that POS Koyo isn't leaking anywhere.

Timing can create an overheating condition as well - make sure you're not too leaned-out.

Whoops! Forgot about this thread!

Yeah Greg, I flushed it and it helped quite a bit. Drove it today since I'm back in town from school and didn't have to worry about it at all.

It peaked at like 206 degrees. Not too shabby for running the A/C and being a 117 out. :D

Clutch fans are awesome.

Yeah, I know they're better, but it's already wired and everything with the fan controller, etc....

I think it's just the heat more than anything. It's just plain hot out.

Anything under 95 degrees and I don't even have to think twice about the temperature.

I agree on the Ambient temperature. If it is already hot, the engine will definitely run hotter haha no matter what fan you have. Even if you had an oil cooler, if hot air is hitting it then it will not be effective enough. The only thing that could help would be some kind of cold water sprayer that would spray the oil cooler, intercooler and radiator to decrease temps.
