Am I getting a good deal?

Hello,

I'm shopping for a new car to replace my '03 Neon, and I've settled on the 08 Versa SL Hatchback. My local dealership is offering me $500 under MSRP as a "military discount", however a dealer an hour down the highway is offering me $675 under MSRP.

I'm thinking of having the local dealer match that, then agree on that price. My query is, does anyone think I could get a better deal? Free tint or some other extra?

Thanks, looking forward to being a Versa owner soon.

I was able to get 600 off MSRP, and got them to give me a free comand start(have the 6 speed so not cheap).Dealers don't seem to budge much on the Versa around here. So you might be able to get a little more off. Good luck

If you have the time go to as many dealers as you can and work them against each other, find the best deal and try to get the local guy match it or have him through in some perks (floor mats, window tint, ect) to make up for the price difference and if they don't want to play nicely then go back to the place that quoted you a better price.

I'm not sure about the SL, but on my S model $684 was the difference between MSRP and invoice. The prices shown on Edmunds.Com had the same MSRP and invoice price that the dealer told me. I have bought 2 Versa's since last March (from the same dealer) and paid less than invoice on both. The 1st was $5.00 under and the second was $500.00 under (Nissan cash incentive).

If the dealer has the car you want in stock, you should get a better deal than if he gets the car from another dealer. If he has to get the car from another dealer, he will lose the manufacturer holdback.

Just a quick note -

The bottom line is most important!

I didnt haggle about the MSRP for three reasons...1. they Offered me $1500 More than the other 3 dealer did for my trade in.2. $750 cash back deal3. They tossed in a few extras that I Wanted! because the car was on the lot.

I got a Great deal and I still Like the dealer. this may be the first time for that.

ghr has a good point about trade-in value, if you're trading in another vehicle.

Also something to consider... I could have bargained with dealers for days, but I went straight to one dealer and had the world's shortest bargaining session (netting me $250 below invoice and 4.9% financing after incentives) for two reasons.

1) I'm a Costco member, so I automatically get a good deal without having to haggle if I go to a Costco participating dealership

and

2) The only Costco participating dealership in the area also happens to give out free service loaners for the life of your car. Which I've already had to use once.

I just purchased (financed) an 08 SL w/cvt, and $675 under sounds like a very good deal. I didn't get quite that good of a deal, but I got the 4 rubber mats thrown in. I also just noticed that on the Canadian website financing for 36 months in 0.9% (mine purchased only last month is 1.9%). I went to a number of dealers in Nova Scotia and Montreal, and there doesn't seem to be much room to move....it is a popular car!

Long story short, I would say that is a good deal.

Enjoy your car! I love mine so far, and it was a blast to drive on the long haul from Toronto to Halifax recently, and also averaged around 6.5L/100km.

up here in the great white north I got a fully loaded 2008 SL hatchback at about 1200$ off the msrp, 2.5% financing, four free oil changed and two tanks of fuel (plus the tank that came with the car I guess, but im not counting that one).

I used a site out there that allows you to calculate invoice price of a car and options, and calculate a 3-5% profit for the dealer. Showed up with the spreadsheet to the dealer, and after hearing his offer (400$ under msrp, which the salesperson said that they were giving the car to me for their "cost") I made my offer, outlining that 5 minutes of his time is worth 5% profit on the car.

Wow, seems like you landed one heck of a deal. I'm specifically gunning for a base SL with none of the tech/sport etc packages, so I don't think I have that much room to play with.

I actually thought I had found a great deal on a new 07 Sentra for $17,400, but the dealer in Ottawa told me 3.9% on the phone, then pulled the "oh no, it's 8% financing, see we're taking a loss on the car...." bs... I walked out. Phoned the local Kingston dealer and basically told them if they could meet the $675 off MSRP I would sign papers on Monday, and they took it.. Yay..

i think some of us are comparing american prices vs. canadian... not sure if this is apples and oranges or not...

we got $1250 off the MSRP for our car. But that was $500 incentive from Nissan, $500 Nissan college discount, and $250 off from the dealer.

i didn't see any purchase special offers on the canadian website for ontario; just a lease offer...

December was a $300 prepaid Visa card (I applied to down payment); this month low finance rate (lower by 1% from December)
