I went to nissan dealership today to purchase a Versa hatchback SL. The car comes with splash guards, floormats, aluminum plates, and the dealer's $749 preservation package which includes window tinting.. blah blah blah.. I have to pay $15,563. I only left my deposit, haven commit. Want to know if it is a good deal. Any advise will help...

yes and i think I got ripped off, the dealer said I pay 14300k plus tax and registering and all that, then at the end it summed up to 18k, I only added extended warranty and alarm? are these two things worth 3k extra? I got the 100k 7 year warranty the best one they got.

2007 model - bad deal2008 model - ok, but could be lower. Go to the Nissan site & configure your car. Ask the dealer for $3000 less than MSRP as a start in the negotiation.

another good resource would be to use edmunds.com. You can configure the car how you want, then they give you a "TMV Report" which means true market value - it's a realistic representation of what other people in your direct area (market) have paid. At the final step, you can request quotes from dealers, and can probably even negotiate a little lower from there once you have the quote in your hand. The truth is (at least on the 07's, I'm not sure about the 08's) the dealership sells Versas as what they call a "micro deal" meaning there is $500 or less between the Sticker price of the vehicle and the invoice price (the price the dealership buys it from nissan for). On my deal (I bought it from a friend of mine), they knocked the entire $500 off the car, plus I got a $500 instant rebate from Nissan because I used their finanace company, and I still paid about 15,000 plus tax and licensefor an SL hatchback with CVT and no packages. I would say you're getting a good deal, but then again, I don't know how the 08's are priced yet.

I would try to get ABS in lieu of that "preservation package." ABS is something you only have one opportunity to get, and it cannot be added later. ABS costs roughly $500 and gives you electronic brake force distribution as a bonus. I hear the Versas without ABS tend to have less than desirable brake operation.

I read on nissausa.com that adding ABS only cost $250. maybe i will talk to the sales person tomolo to check if the car i am buying has it. Thanks for all the information. greatly appreciated

I used the TMV on edmunds.com to check. just like jfanaselle mentioned. The TMV price is 16600. So i guess i am paying 1000 less. And the preservation package from the dealership is free.. hehehe.I guess i will buy from them then. in the mean time i will see if another dealership will lower his price to match wat i got... hope i get lucky again.thank you all for helping me. I am buying this car for my girlfriend

I am not say you are getting ripped. Us it as a starting point. Your goal is to pay as little as possible. Don't care if the dealers kids will have dinner on their plates.

Offer $3000 less, let them sweat it out a bit. They will probably come back and say $1500 less. Say no & leave the dealer, saying it is to much. This is were the game starts. If the dealer is desperate to sell cars, they will call you back & go lower or toss in extras, like oil changes for life.

Go get pre-approved for a loan from your bank. Get the interest rate they will charge you. Then if you decide to buy from the dealer, check out his financing deals. If the interest rate is lower go with it.

The free preservation package is not free. Window tinting is what $200-300, Spray on fabric protection is $20-30. What else is included for $749.

If they put dealer logos on the car, ask for an additional $500 off for your "free" advertising. I made them take off all dealer logos on my car before I left since they wouldn't give me a discount for advertising. This was after I called them on their "We'll beat any dealers price or you get a Z" add. I had a quote from Autonation for an ordered car for about $1,500 below sticker using the B2B pricing. I brought that to the other dealer & didn't tell him until the end. They thought because the Versa was new & in demand, they could charge $3000 over sticker. At the end I said that is a damn good price for two cars, gave them their own print add & the quote for an identical Versa. They gave me the quoted price with the sob story that I was taking money out of his childrens mouths. I have yet to go back to that dealer for anything. I take it to a better dealer for warranty & recall work. I even let the other dealer put on the brake fluid cover during a TPMS fix. They got 30 minutes from Nissan for a 1 minute job.

Wow, I thought I was the only person that did this. I completely agree

As a point of reference I got an 07 Versa SL fully loaded for 16400. This is BEFORE taxes and extended warranties and GAP protection (which you SHOULD get if you aren't putting more than 3K down...I know...I'm proof) DO NOT be afraid to bust a dealer's, ummmm, cojones as much as you deem necessary. If you feel you're overpaying after you have done your due diligence just walk away if they won't agree to your price...make sure they have contact info for you...they will call you if they want the sale bad enough.

Also....be wary of finance rates. Know your credit score and what interest rate you should be paying. They sometimes wil match your price you want then screw you on a higher finance rate to get the $$$$ back...

I hate car shopping ><

Good luck!

Hey, just wondering which Nissan dealer you're talking about. I bought my wife's Versa @ Nelson Nissan at 101st and Memorial...they were a lovely bunch to deal with (sarcasm, of course). Tried to rip me off during the whole process, I don't think I'll be going back there for anything again after that experience.

i bought my versa in houston, where i reside. Sterling Mccall Nissan. But i will be driving the car to tulsa for my girlfriend. she studies there. I know nelson nissan, i bought my car from nelson mazda. and yes, they are not friendly to deal with... however, throughout my search for a versa, i was emailing with a guy called James Jones from JackieCooper Nissan (on memorial 100+ st) . He cannot match the price i got but was very helpful in helping me find out if it was a hoax that i am paying so little for the car. I highly recommend JackieCooper Imports.

I see. I had a brain fart the other day - the dealer we purchased from was Jackie Cooper Nissan (which is next door to Nelson Mazda on Memorial).

Jackie Cooper Imports, down the street a little (their Infiniti/Mercedes/Porsche group) is a nice bunch, though. My dad got his G35 from them, and I take my G20 there for service, and they always seem like a nice bunch to deal with.

And the same could be said for every dealer, I'm sure, it just depends who your salesman is, and how you deal with them - I'm sure my fiasco directly related from the fact that I was a hard bargainer as well as young. Had it been, say, my dad, they probably wouldn't have thought they could pull the wool over his eyes very easily, so they probably wouldn't have tried anything. Then he'd come away with a nice opinion of them. Oh well, we've got the car and that's pretty much all that matters now.

Wow, that's a better deal than mine!

I just bought my Versa HB 08 SL. I have your options too but add ABS. I paid 16489.00. That's not with TTL.

If that's not a good deal, SHHHHH. Don't tell me. I feel good about the car and the people were great. I couldn't get anyone else to quote me online and mine had to be ordered.

If it's a CVT, that's not horrible. that's pretty close to MSRP.

I paid $16,659 for Max (without taxes and license).

SL with CVT, convienence package, and ABS. Cost ended up being around $50 over invoice.
