Does anyone know where the torque converter lock solenoid is on an automatic transmission for a 1995 altima? The dealership seems to think that it's part of the entire solenoid module. If that's the case, is there any way to disable the torque converter locking without disabling all of the solenoids?

if the lockup solenoid isnt working then its not gonna lock up... Is the TC slipping or something?

you cant buy the solenoid by itself, you have to buy the whole pack as a unit.. like $100 maybe.

The TC wont lockup if you unplug the turbine rev sensor, however i dont really recommend this for more than a temp fix..... Might try it.

Well, it may not be the lockup solenoid itself that's malfunctioning, but rather something else that's telling it to lock up when it shouldn't.

Basically, what happens is as you're driving down the road at a constant throttle position when the car is warm, the revs will suddenly start to jump up, then fall back, then jump up and just go wild in general. Sometimes it just does it a little bit and it goes away, other times it gets to the point where the car bucks constantly, the revs go all over the place, and the car dies if you try to stop. Then dies when you try to start it, unless you stomp on the gas after doing so. It will even exhibit this behavior when in neutral or park.

It seems to go away if you push the gas pretty hard. I imagine the WOT switch on the TPS disables the lockup circuit.

Pretty much positive. When it starts doing it when you're driving, the revs go up pretty sharply, by anywhere from 700-1300rpm. I can't think of any engine problem that would cause that.

Ok i'll buy that..... Obviously your trans is gonna need to be replaced.... HOwever try like I said to unplug that turbine rev sensor... youll get a CEL and stuff but thats about it, and the TC wont lockup. Since you have a 1995 youll be fine, OBDII wont throw fits (since you dont have it)

I got to thinking... does the tachometer get it's signal from the ignition coil?

Also, where is the turbine rev sensor?

And as for the non-OBDII thing, I think the car is actually OBD-II. All the plugs are the OBD-II style ones, and usually when I ask for a 1995 part at autozone or whatever, they give me the wrong one, and I have to order the same part for a 1996, which comes out right.

a 95 altima uses the RE4F04A trans.

the lock up solenoid is part of the solenoid pack, attached to the valve body, inside the trans.

the solenoids must be replaced as a unit, and will cost around $380 [parts only] from the dealer.

So, does anyone know where the turbine rev sensor is, and what negative effects unplugging it will have?

The sensor is on the end of the case near the left inner fender well. Remove the plastic sheild and you will see it toward the passenger compartment side of the trans. Follow the harness up over the trans to the connector. I believe the harness routes under the trans mount on the altima.
