Altima stuck in Fail Safe mode after MAF failure

My '94 Altima has been starting hard for the past several weeks, then totally died. A general tour around the engine compartment included unplugging the Mass Airflow Sensor, which allowed the car to start. Replaced it with a used one, to no avail. With MAF unplugged, it starts, idles, won't go over 2500 RPM. Check Engine Light comes on at this point. When I shut it down then restart it, Check Engine Light stays off until 2500 RPM. Research indicates bad MAF wiring or bad ECU. Any ideas??
