Altima RPM/Acceleration

My daughter has a 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5s. approximately 130,000 miles.

She was driving on the hwy doing about 70 with cruise control on. Cruise control light began blinking and car started slowing down as if it came off of cruise. She gave it gas and RPMs went up accordingly but car did not accelerate to match. She then noticed smoke coming from engine bay. She thought initially car was overheating but the light was not on indicating such and she didnt need any fluid.

Car is currently not driveable.

Any thoughts on what this could be?

Sorry for the late reply. The car is not at my home and i have not heard back regarding the check engine light.
