I want to jump in on this, because this story is EXACTLY what I went through before purchasing my A/C three weeks ago.
There's so much more to this than simply Infiniti status vs. Altima status. There's a ton involved.
I went to look at a used 2008 G37S 6MT in Nashville two days before I bought my Altima. SICK RIDE I must say. There were 17k miles on it... the test drive was nice, but raised several concerns.
1) It needed tires. I've read all over the place (forums, edmunds, etc) that tires on that car don't last long. 15k to 20k miles on average. Only Bridgestone makes them in one Potenza model... I couldn't find them anywhere for less than $250 a tire.
2) The brakes rubbed badly. Rotors weren't warped, but I know it needed pads. The dealer insisted that they were new and just needed to be broken in. Unfortunately for them, that line only works on semi-undereducated people. I'm sure they thought they could get away with it because I was a 24yo kid with a Sentra and a leather jacket. w/e.
It really depends on what your girl is going to do with it. If it's a daily driver (and I mean commuter for around 20+ miles a day round trip) and her ONLY car, I say don't get the Infiniti and buy the Altima. The A/C is a wonderful daily driver with a great balance in the sport/luxury. It's not an Infiniti, but it's no slouch. The 19s on the Infiniti don't give way to bumps and stuff, and if the roads are rough where you guys live, you're going to be haunted by a slew of other repairs that will come sooner than later. Worn out suspension parts, tires, etc.
I didn't buy the G (aside from my skepticality about its previous owner and the shape it was in) because I realized, as it was going to be my only vehicle, that I wouldn't be able to keep it in the condition I wanted unless it was a second vehicle. Not as many car washes, racking up the miles, going through tires once a year at $1000 a set plus mounting and balancing, plus all the other maintenance those cars require at much higher prices than the Altimas do.
It also depends on your insurance. For me, with a fairly clean record (only one non-fault accident) the G averaged $15 to $45 PER MONTH more on insurance than the Altima. I quoted Progressive, Geico, State Farm (which was atrociously high) and Nationwide. Geico ended up being the cheapest for me.
Anyway, The G is a gorgeous vehicle both performance and luxury wise, but may not be the smartest move unless she just has the money to blow. I make $60k/yr and could've afforded the infiniti just the same, but there are two types of people that drive Infinitis - those that CAN and those that SHOULD. I bought the Altima and haven't looked back. Her situation may be starkly different from mine (ie income and use for the vehicle) and in that case, more power to her. Just keep in mind there's much more to this decision than MSRP.
Hope that helps.
