Ok I'm an extreme noob when it comes to sound systems! But I have a P800.2 Rockford Fosgate Amplifier on two 12" Kicker CVRs. I am currently on an 8 gauge wiring kit and I was going to upgrade to a 4 gauge kit and also add an extra battery. I was wondering what exactly does a capacitor do and will I be needing one, considering the equipment I have?

Any help is greatly appreciated, sorry for the noobiness ^_^

Thicker wire gauge is almost always a good idea. It makes it easier to upgrade in the future.

With your system there is really no need for an extra battery. I didn't find a need for it until I went all out with my setup. Once you crack the 2000 watt RMS barrier, a second battery might be useful. Less than that you're probably wasting money and adding unnecessary weight to the car. If you feel you would like an upgrade on the battery end, think about replacing the one under the hood. I wouldn't do more than that if I were you.

Capacitors are essentially worthless. They will draw more power from your system and not really give any benefit. I've used capacitors from 0.5 farads up to about 20 farads. Neither provided any benefit. Once I realized what a waste it was I stopped wasting money on them. I can't think of any system where a capacitor would be worthwhile. That even includes the best setup I can possibly imagine. For you, I'd upgrade the wiring and then consider upgrading interior speakers if you have money you want to spend.
