It has been 3 months since I've purchased the Altima and I received a letter in the mail saying it's due for the 3,750 miles/3-month service. However, the car only has 1,400 miles on it.

Should I still take it in to be serviced? I don't understand the 3-month thing, because a car doesn't age by time, but by the amount of miles it has driven.

I think oil still ages by time. So it has been 3 months, and the think of it like the oil they used for deep fryers. The fryer has been used for a couple of times, but it just sits there all the time on other days, would you eat fried food like that?

Not sure if that's a good example.

all products are exposed to wear and tear, either by natural or mechanical...it is the safe time as the manufacturer sees it best for the car to be seviced:either the amount of miles driven or the amount of time the car was out from the dealership...to be safe you rather have it serviced so that if anything happens to your car,you can tell them flatly and frankly that you have been compliant with the maintenance thing and you did your part....hope that helps...

The only 3 months service you should be doing is a oil change. Sounds like they're trying to milk more money from you.

1400 miles in 3 months is an average of 15 miles per day. The theory is, if you make nothing but short trips with your car (15 min or less), the engine and oil may not completely come up to full operating temperature. When an engine does come to full temp, whatever miosture is present in the oil will be burned off and evacuated through the engine breather. If the engine isn't fully heated, it has the potential to form condensation on the metal components inside the engine.

I don't fully believe in that theory. Its your call if you want to have the service done early or not. Most used to say "change your oil ever 3000 miles, or 6 months, which ever comes first" but times have changed, oil is better, engines are more effiecent.

Its your call

Didnt you get the first oil change from your dealer free? If you've already done it, do the oil change your self. Its simple.

Afraid of getting your khakis dirty??? Just bustin buddy.

I've never had a shop change oil in any vehicle in my entire life. in fact, i can't think of any shop that ever WORKED on my vehicles, right down to my jeep engien swap, swappedout my carbureted engine with a fuel injected one. (with the exception of my coupe, warrantied ABS actuator).

Is only the first oil change free @ the dealer? I thought they service the car at regular intervals for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

I didn't hear anything from my dealer about 1st oil change is free,,, it's probably only certains dealerships which offer that. yay or nay?

Personally I think the whole thing about changing oil at 3750 miles is a scam for Nissan to make more money. No way that oil needs to be changed more than every 5000 miles. Of course it won't do any harm to change it sooner, but they're just hustling up their cash flow.

So each maintenance service costs additional money?

That is correct. unless you purchased some soft of maintenance plan that includes services, or if the salesman was nice to throw in at least ONE service (didn't get that with mine), then you will have to pay for your maintenance items

What a way for Nissan to just get more money!! This blows. I just canceled my service appointment. Why pay $30 to get oil changed when I can do it for $15 elsewhere? I assume that as long as I have proof of regular maintenance (wherever) that Nissan won't void my warranty.

Yeah, my dealer said that I can get my oil changed anywhere, but to keep up with records...
