Hi All, i have an alitma 99. i took it to the shop and the mechanic said that the head gasket on the time belt is leaking. I have my alternator in the way so they said that it would take 15 hours of work and cost 2,000. I'm not going to put that much money into an old car. I want to do the job myself. Any suggestions on where to buy parts and maybe even a website that will give me a guidance on how to tackle this job without completely screwing up my car. Thx

i prefer to stick with OEM parts whenever possible. as for doing it yourself, it is fairly labor intensive so you might want to invest in one of those manuals you can get from autozone

I would get another opinion. I don't know how much the parts would cost, but it couldn't be more than a few hundred for gaskets. I removed the alternator on my 98 in less than 20 minutes. What is he charging for labor over $100.00 per hour?It won't hurt to shop around for another labor quote and diagnosis.
