Hi. I have Altima 2002, 2.5 L and there is 9900 milage on it. I bought it like 10 days ago and I have been noticing serious problems even the mechanics can’t know it. My biggest problem is the engine oil consumption, I have to add oil every two days which is something annoying. I went to two mechanics; the first one told me that he couldn’t find any leak or smoking. He tried to figure out the problem but he couldn’t. The second mechanic said, maybe the tap wasn’t tight well which makes the oil flooded by adding much oil. He took off the engine cover to observe the car for two days but he still can’t verify the problem. I have appointment with him on Tuesday. Hopefully, he can fix it. I went to Nissan Agency and they told me you have to change the engine because it is a common problem. What the **** is that?? If it is common problem why do they sell their cars to us??I can’t return the car back anymore. I really need your help guys. I want u to advise me about this situation and how can I fix it?I have another question, what type of oil should I use? Now I’m using 10 W30 which made the oil consumes slowly. Is it good? How many galloons should I fill my car with? And what type of fuel and how many miles can I drive with full fuel?

My best regards

You need new piston rings, not necessarily a new engine. The catalytic converter breaks up and the ceramics get sucked back into the combustion chamber. From there they get between the ring and cylinder wall and bore it out and wear out the rings too. The gap allows oil to slip past the rings and be burnt with the fuel/air.

If you complain enough, I have heard of Nissan replacing the engine.

If the chamber walls are gouged then simply replacing the rings will not do much at all. I doubt Nissan will do a rebuild but will instead want to install a different motor all together. Motors with this issue that were still under warranty were fully replaced.

Here is the NOM link where this issue is being discussed:

In relation to your oil:

I use full synthetic, Valvoline or Quaker State works. The place you get it done will know how many quarts you need - not gallons ;-). I think my 2005 Altima typically takes about 3(?).

Also, the next time you get your oil CHANGED (after fixing your issue), I would def use the synthetic, change it every 5,000-6,000 miles for your car, and use a system cleaner (Gumout works well) to clean your pistons, spark plugs, fuel injectors, etc.
