I have been having cronic issues with the alternator in my car. More specifically, with the bolts that hold it in. On no less than three seperate occassions all three bolts have backed themselves out. The first time, I had just put the alternator back in the car about two weeks earlier, and blamed myself for perhaps not torquing them correctly. I bought a replacement sent (27 bucks!) and tightened them to factory specs. About 2 months later my dummy battery light came on and lo and behold the bolts had backed themselves out. Then I took it to a dealership and had them install the bolts. I explained what had been happening and the mechanic used lock tite in the threads to make sure.

This morning on my way to work the light came on again. I pulled to the side of the road and the tensioner bolt had come loose and was gone.

Anyone have any idea why my alternator doesn't like it's bolts?

Bent pulley by some chance... there as to be some force to back the bolts out.

So the saga continues. I put the new tensioner in. I cross drilled it and put in a retainer to keep if from coming out. I adjusted the tension to about 1/2 inch of play on the belt and then torque'd the two bolts in the alternator down to spec from my manual. I started up the car and the "dead battery" light and the ebrake light came on again. I adjusted the belt tension again and started the car and the lights went out... about a mile down the road the car lurched again under power so I came back to the garage and started pulling the alternator. The power wire that comes from the unit to the fuse box was absolutely rotten. It's a copper wire with about 50 strands... only about 5 or 10 were actually left. So I replaced that with a piece of PCV copper batter wire and charged the battery for about 2 minutes and she starts right up... but now!!!! Now when I push on the brake, or put my blinker on the most amazing thing happens. My tach and speedo needles bounce all over the place, until I turn off the blinker or stop pushing the break. It's actually pretty funny, but worrisome.

BTW Nismo Freak... I just took a look at your site and I really hope you activate all those links, if you do I'd say that'll be one of the best sites out there for 240's. Looks good so far!
