alternator wiring

Hello, My son has a 86 720. He was having trouble with the alternator so he disconnected it to have it tested, now he can't remember how it was hooked up. It has a wire harness but he said it also has another wire that was jumped from one post to another or something like that. Is it just from the two postson the back or what is he talking about. Please help if you can. Thanks in advance.
