well today my mom was driving the q and it went out.well it's goin out.

the brake light is dim and when you rev her it goes away. but the info center display does'nt say cahrgin system so and so.the alternator was charging at 13.7volts and you can hear it chargin.

so now i gotta replace the aternator....so is it easy to remove it if i remove the battery tray and the a/c bracket?

instead of removing the fan, radiator upper hose, bracket?

well wanted to revive a dead thread.got the alternator in. theres a bolt in the back the just falls...i dunno why they couldnt weld to the body or something.

but got it to stay on with some loc-tite.

now here's the funny thing...been at work all day, got the alternator went to advance to have it test it, they drop the damn thing because they didnt strap it in properly, now it's over charging, went to get another one went to autozone it passed.

prayin the old one out which pressed againts the transmission filter, which pressed against radiator. then the radiator was cracked (did'nt replace that till like 3 days later).

so all in all i've only invested about $60 (oil change) so i'm not doing bad.

now i got a quart of marvel mystery oil and i wanted to ask before i just dump the whole thing in there:should i use it before the oil change drive her for a day or two then drain the oil?and should i use the whole bottle?

Actually I think you are way behind the 8 ball.

What are you trying to accomplish with the MMO? You do realize it is a very light machine oil not suitable for the crankcase environment for very long?

There are dozens of SOLVENTS designed to dissolve different things. The hardest part is understanding what you are trying to dissolve and put into temporary suspension so it can be drained away easily.

This is easily pointed out by taking a valve cover or oil pan or sludged cams and trying different solvents to see what worksfastest at what temperature without causing more damage than you began with in the first place.

Chemical engineers spend their entire lives experimenting and formulating and cost analysis products.

If it is sold at a discount parts facility causing little or no harm is more important than effectiveness because the average buyer does not understand hazards.

Can't be sued for making it too weak vs causing damage.

Anything you can buy over the shelf as far as "fix it additives" that are supposed to actually do something arent worth crap...

If you're worried about varnish, use BG quick clean.

Mike Goodwin (Goody94Q45) recomends Marvel Mystery Oil when used properly (Use only a PINT then drain after a day or soonner).

But there are many things that can cause ticking noises, from the cruise control actuator to a belt tensioner. Thats why a mechaincs steathascope come real handy when working with cars.

^^This. Much cleaner method. Put the car on jack stands, lay down with a pillow, and relax while you remove the bolts for the compressor. After you do that, the alternator takes 2 minutes.

good thing i came on here first.

the car sat for awhile while needing a couple repairs. he was gonna give it to his son. but lost his job and ended up sellin the car.

I assure you it needs more than just a couple of repairs.

What is your strategy to assess the current condition and devise a rehabilitation plan?

IMO MMO and seafoam are made to make owners feel like they're actually doing something, as opposed to actually doing something.

That's not just a opinion its a proven fact when you look at the MSDS and Google the chemical (If needed). At best they are a temporary fix.

well...gonna use a pint of the mmo drive her for a day then change the oil.hell maybe while i'm at it if it's nice i'll remove the valve covers and take a look see.

it seems though the more she's driven the quieter the noise gets.

Quite frankly, using the BG Quick Clean at idle 15 minutes immediately before draining oil while hot is a better regimen.
