so much has changed in the way cars are designed these days. My guess would be to have at least $800 - $900. I am not sure how much alternator design has changed for these cars. My rule of thumb with the G-35 Coupe is to set aside, at least $1,000 annually for any seen or unforseen maintenance. Brakes alone can demand between $300 - $500 for maintenance. G-35 has a high maintenance cost. But it is still better in maintenance than a BMW.

Well, that depends on the shop really. I had an alternator go on me before on a road trip one time and the garage ended up charging me like $400 or $500 with towing. But the alternator was in a really difficult spot to get to, so they had to jack it up and what not.

Now it would be unfair of me to tell the rest of the story, because its a pretty sweet story, I think. I was driving to my parents for my little brother's high school graduation. Back then I had a 96 Monte Carlo as a temp car for a couple of years, this was actually a couple of months before I took delivery of my G. Its a 7 hour drive and about 2 hours into it, my Volt light came on. Well, the SES light came on every time I drove for extended periods so I ignored it. Two hours later I was at the Mackinac Bridge, which is Michigan's equivalent to the Golden Gate, except its white and is 5 miles long. As I went by the South Tower (was heading north), my XM went out and I asked my buddy why he turned off the radio. He claimed he didn't touch it, I didn't believe him. I look at my speedo and it starts going higher, up to 100 MPH, I was like what the hell, then I noticed the engine died. I threw it into N and coasted into the right lane. Now, the bridge is constantly being painted and it just so happened that I was in the construction zone in which they were painting...on both sides. Each direction there are 2 lanes and only the middle lanes were open (down to one lane each way), so I coasted into the construction lane. But the thing was, is that I stopped exactly halfway across the bridge. If I had made it past half way I could have coasted into the toll booth. So I'm sitting there and I call 911. "State the location of your emergency please." "Yeah, umm, my car just broke down on the Bridge exactly halfway." Chuckle on the other side, "Alright I'll send out a wrecker," chuckle some more. The wrecker came from the North side, which was the direction I was going so he had to turn around once he got to me. Remember both sides were under construction, yeah, they had to stop traffic both ways just to get the wrecker onto my side of the bridge. Talk about embarrassing but funny.

I know that the Nissan Quest alternator puts out a few more amps....might be a cheap alternative.

(the quest also has a VQ35)

I have found over many years (I'm an old farht) that it is cheaper to find an electrical automotive shop that rebuilds and repairs alternators and sometimes electric motors as well to repair your existing one. If the alternator is easy to remove, you can remove it, take it in save some labor $$$ and let them bench test it and rebuild it. There are diode rectifiers that can open or short and bearings that get replaced. As long as the case and armature windings are ok there is not much else to it except for perhaps a regulator circuit board? You could always call the parts department of your local Infiniti dealer to get price comparison vs a new one?

Good luck

i'd buy one off ebay for $50, and have your current one rebuilt (built bigger if possible).

Thats what i have in case mine goes out from stereo drainage.
