Take it to a reputable rebuild shop. You can't replace the unit as a whole with a part available in NA, but pretty much everything you might need to replace exists in some other NA Nissan alternator.

there arent any other alternators that would work?

rebuild seems like a hassle to me, and im looking for a model with a higher output.

Yet another reason to rebuild it. I'll bet they can increase the output.

There isn't a bolt in unit that I'm aware of. I've HEARD the KAE can be modified to work, but I've never seen it first hand.

Someone posted this a while ago.

I think that would solve the problem with the ka alternator. I ran a rigged up ka alternator on a cut ca18 brakcet. I think this adjustment arm would make using a ka alternator a bolt on affair.

yea, i posted that up. i plan on getting one to see if it will work. ive used a KAE alternator before, but i didnt have a tensioner and i dont recommend doing it like that. just a problem waiting to happen.

if you decide to rebuild it, dont say anything about it being from an imported motor. just tell them it is for a regular KA 240sx. i believe the internals are the same between the CA and KA but they have different housings, which is why the tensioner problem arises when trying to install a KA alternator.

Any good shop will eyeball the parts and take care of it, just cause they can look at it and go "that's an X gizmo and a Y flux capacitor... *replace*"

The local rebuild place quoted me $160 to upgrade any alternator to 180-200 amps. I may go for that just to offset my accessories (efans and lights).

My alt tested a bit over 100A on their test machine after rebuild at the place I took it, and it handles the fans + lights decently considering at the moment it's not very well wired up and I have a crap battery in there.

Once I've relocated my battery and replaced the alt wiring with larger gauge, that'll be probably just fine. Right now I think I have like 8ga alt wire (the stock one was f'd up and needed replacing)

What's funny is that when you go to the parts store and buy a "new" alternator, you're getting the EXACT same thing that you would get if you take it down and get it rebuilt.

It's just silly NOT to just have it rebuilt.
