The alt went out the other day when I got to work, no big deal I'll just put a new one on. Get the new one on and its smoking after about a minute of running. Thinking it was a bad reman unit I installed my OEM alt that I had laying around, drive home and thats smoking too :tisk: . Ohmed the wires going from the alt to bat and everything is fine, alt has a good ground and charging voltage is normal 13.xx. Alt also tested fine, no diode problems.

Also when the key is sometimes turned in the on or acc position and you turn the key off the idiot lights on the dash stay on? I was talking to a buddy (former nissan tech) and he said start with a new ignition switch (on order), not sure if its getting stuck between 2 circuits. It should be replaced anyways because its flopping around like a limp d!ck. I looked at the alt wiring diagram and it seems like a pretty simple circuit (although I sucks with electrical problems).

Just wondering if any had a problem like this and figured it out? Its not PS fluid leaking on the alt either.

Thanks, Dave

I had the car running yesterday with a volt meter across the battery, started to wiggle some wires around fuse box near the battery. I did notice the voltage started to fluctuate a little so when i have time i'll cut the harness open and see if theres a problem with the wiring. Car worked fine today............its amazing that this car will fix some of its problems by itself.
