Hey all. I haven't been around much since the Q has been mostly trouble-free. Mostly. (Finally hit 236k miles the other day!) It was a bad alternator that brought me back though. Anyway, I just thought I'd mention that the alternator R&R from the front/top of the engine is EASY. No A/C removal required, and no jackstands. Strictly a driveway job. Removed the fan shroud, fan and belt, and had it swapped in about 3 hours. Many thanks to Joe for the parts... again.

(FYI: You can drive for about 30 minutes with a dead alternator and all of the accessories turned off!)

I can't even loosen my belts without raising the front end at least a little (how do you remove the fan shroud with the car not raised?). How the heck did you get under there, short of a trench in the driveway?

If your skinny and nimble it can be done...

If the alternator has been replaced before its not too bad... Otherwise its really stuck in there.....

You saying I'm fat? I find it helpful to at least be able to see the fasteners before I remove them.

Haha, you guys crack me up. Actually, there's enough space under there to remove the shroud -- no problem. (No belly pan may help too...) This is the 2nd alternator in 236k miles.

Obviously not an Active Suspension car.

I once Removed the alternator on my 500SEL MBZ in the parking lot at work , then took it to the alternator shop for rebuild, went and picked it up, and reinstalled it in the car--all in my suit pants, white shirt. I did roll up my sleeves and take my tie off. Didn't even have to wash my hands (used plastic gloves)

Bond, that is, James Bond, I presume? Hilarious story. Definitely gets the award for best Spontaneous Formal Car Servicing by an Owner award.

Not true. It does have active suspension. The trick is to remove all of the necessary bolts within 3 minutes (before the suspension settles) of shutting the engine off. BTW: I need an ACTSUS recharge!

Mike, nice work, good to see you back!

I take it you'll be at the event in 2 weeks?

Quella needs some "Q-company" - Should be a pretty impressive lineup.
