whats up guys, I have a question on the alternator on my 240. My alternator just went on my car and it only has 52,000 miles on it. Is that the normal life of an alternator? I also just installed electric fans. I was wondering if i needed a more powerful alternator than the one it comes with stock? I also have two amps powering my highs and a 12' sub. Would a hi performance battery help prolong my alternator?

our alternators are weak, very weak and only rated at 80 amps. if you can find a high current alternator, you would be set. If you do, shoot me a PM.

A High performance battery will help alleviate some of the strain.

my alternator was overcharging my battery and blew it up, the battery was actually smoking when the car turned off. It was an optima battery red top, thank god it had 3 year warranty, but our alternators suck!!!!

i would just like to say that im running a high powered pioneer premier headunit running an EQ witha memphis 1000 watt sub amp and a 4 channel memphis amp for my speakers.

my alternator is stock with 150K on it and i have an optima yellowtop under the hood. i chose the yellow top since ive had a lot of good luck with them and they are great since i play my stereo a lot when the car is off. i also have 2 1 farad capacitors for the amps and whenever the system is real loud and pounding out music, the alternator has NO probelm feeding it juice. i have not noticed dimming at all and my volt meter shows constant 14.4 volt readings at the hot side of the alternator with the system bumping and the car running at idle.

if your alternator is giving you some trouble, i would look into having an alternator shop re-wind it to a higher amperage such as up to a 100 or 120amp. if not, look into an aftermarket high powered alternator from ohio generator or stinger. there are lots of options, just take a look around. i also suggest getting a deep cycle battery because it will save your a$$ if you ever drain your battery since it doesnt get damaged like a normal lead acid battery.
