I’m having a strange alternator issue. I bought a reman. alternator from Pepboys and started to bolt it up to my 2004 I35… but I noticed if I tighten the bottom bolt too tightly the alternator seizes up and won't spin… I thought it was just a bad alternator so I tried to take it back but the guy at the counter told me the alternator was still good and that I was probably just over tightening to bolt… So I brought it back home and bolted it up, making sure that the bolt wasn't too tight so the pulley could spin. I took it for a test drive and it appears to be working but I’m hearing a nasty grinding sound coming from that part of the engine bay.

Tomorrow I’m going to loosen the bolt a little more and double check the idler pulley and belt tension. Has anyone had any issues like this before?

Thanks

You may have a bad idler or tensioner pulley. Those would be my first guess if you put a good alternator on it.

Keep an eye on that Pep Boys alternator. A few years back I had to return 3 of them in a month before giving up and getting a Nissan factory remain from a dealer. Who ever was rebuilding them for pep Boys was doing a terrible job.
good luck

Try to go to a place and get the old one rebuilt
you will be down a day or two but to me its worth it if you can keep the old one
