I have a '92 240sx SE with (HICAS) 105,000mi on it.

i've had the car for seven yrs but have only driven it seasonally for about 4 of them. i recently put it back on the road and im having a major charging system issue ( i think).

everytime i start my car I HAVE TO REV THE ENGINE TO 3000RPM directly after start up otherwise it will stall out and have a dead battery. also the EGR relay will start to "buzz".

I have tested and replaced the relay already and checked the engine ground with a multimeter but those 2 seem to check out just fine.

I was once told that i might have a 2 stage alternator and that it may not be charging on the low stage.

If anyone could confirm this or share some sort of solution or simalar problem. i would be very grateful.

Thanks. Matt

im not sure about the 2 stage alternator thing but it basically sounds like the alternator is bad and needs replaced. sometimes when alternators go bad they will charge a little if you rev the engine a lot. when my factory original went bad but it would put out enough juice to keep the car running if i revved the crap out of it but as soon as i let it idle for a few seconds the car would die.

since you have a multimeter...

what's the voltage reading B4 starting the vehicle & what's the V reading after you start it?
