My car died last night and i tried to jump it but still wouldnt start. so then i tried anotehr battery and it worked so i got a new one. But then i was reading the threads about alternator test. How i run the car idle, then take the neg out and see if it runs.

My problem is that the car idles when i take the negative out..but i reved it once and it died. I was too scared to try again, reving i mean. The car runs fine now, i drove around for 10 minutes, but i'm scared taht its my alt thats fux0r3d.

simple test. when the car died, did the electrical dim out, then it died like it had no electrical power?

[if yes, its the alternator. and your statements support that also.]

anytime the cars electrical dies while the engine is running, its the alternator.

all the battery does is start the car, then the alternator provides the power, and charges the battery.

Yes, and when alternator dies it takes power from battery and kills the battery too, so better have it changed before you'll kill life of your battery!

wait, you took the neg. battery terminal off while it was running??? holy ****. i think thats what fried your alt. when you do that it will full feild the windings. thus overloading them and burning them out.

I have tested many times and never fried any alternators, this test helps to detect if power is supplied by alternator or battery, if engine shuts of that means alternator is bad and needs to be replaced, if battery was used all the times than it would die in very short period of time.

Its cheaper to get it rebuilt, saved me over $100. You will be still getting the same part from a dealer most likely.

A company called Hite in Columbus, Ohio does this. WHY would you goto a store and buy a rebuilt part they bought from a rebuilder when you yourself can cut the overhead that the store needs to mark it up and get it from the source.

Why are we having this conversation, guess opinions are like (you know what) everyone has one.

To whomever thinks it is a great idea to pull the neg. cable off to check to see if your alternator is charging:

It WILL fry things. I have seen it fry an alternator and an ecu(on different cars) You may get away with it, but not everyone does.
