if the car will stay on with it unplug, its because its running on the batt juice and not the actual alt.. disconeect the batt n see if it will stay running just to make sure ur alt ints screwed up.. also a bad voltage regulator can cause that too wich means ur alt is bad.
DO NOT disconnect your battery while the car is running! That is an old school trick that worked in the early 80's and older cars. All modern cars need the battery in the system as an accumulator to absorb voltage fluctuations. The voltage regulator cannot handle the spikes without a battery in series. Jump starting your car or someones car can cause the same problem. I have replaced ecms on mitsubishis and nissans from people jumping the car constantly because they were too cheap to replace the battery.
Your problem sounds like a bad diode in the alternator leaking to ground causing a short. Put a good charged battery on your car and unplug the alternator wires, plus the big charge wire, and see if it starts. You do not need an alternator to run your car for short term (15-25 minutes), but you will need a method of recharging the battery.
