I still have the ground and power wire connected to the alternator. I unplugged the two thin wires (in the weatherproof connector). Alternator still charging.

It did stop charging after about 30 seconds. Is this normal?

I am having trouble with my alternator belt squealing, and it seems like the field is engaging too fast.

Thanks - Evan

The thin wires just go to your ECU(?) to tell it that the alternator is charging properly. If not, your brake and battery lights will turn on in your cluster. The alternator and charging system will still function normally without that plug connected. I'm assuming the charging stopped because the voltage difference was not enough for the regulator to remain on. I know you don't want to hear assumptions at this point but this is the way I see it working in my head.

I thought one of those wires would be the field wire that engages the alternator. I may be wrong. I guess its time to check out the schematics and figure out whats going on.

Ill post after i get more useful information to add.
