alternator and headlight prob. please help

hey I have a 1996 240sx SE. On the drive home last night the dash lights got really bright then the batt. light and brake light on the dash came on. few sec. later the lowbeam head lights went out. Then after half a mile the batt. light and brake light went off and the car was acting fine. but still no lowbeam lights. the stock fog lights and highbeam work. When I got home and popped ther hood the battery was covered in water from the fill holes over flowing. so I know I need a new alternator. but what fuse or relay do I need to check to get the low beam working. also when u have the high beam on the low beams are on as well so i know the lights are fine. please help thanks

Well you got the alternator part right . As far as fuses, the headlights work on two 20 amp fuses. I'm guessing that one of them blew from a possible electrical short, so check them out. Just because high beams work doesn't mean the lows work as well. The low beams are dual filament bulbs (1 high, 1 low) and then the high beams itself are single filament bulbs. I say check that out first and then come back if it still isn't working. Good luck.
