alternative way to check transmission oil?

So i know there's a fill and a drain plug, they just don't feel like moving. Even with about 2 feet of leverage they wont budge and i feel like i'm going to break something. I need to know if there's another way to find out whether or not this used transmission i have has any oil left in it. Can i somehow siphon fluid out, if there is any, from the shifter?
