I have 1991 Q45 w130k miles. In july of 2002 my altenator went out so I had it replaced. It went out again in Nov. 2002 and I had it replaced again. Now it's Aug 2003 and it's out again. What could be wrong. I had the charging system checkout and I was told it was fine. I personally think it may be the custom stereo and amp that is installed. Could that be the problem? When I had the altenator replaced it cost me $250. each time so, I gonna try to do it myself this time. Can I get some tips on how to remove it. Thanks.

Are you using an aftermarket alternator (AutoZone, Pep Boys)? Given the price I suspect that's the case. Typical results for non-factory units. Also a bad battery can take out a new alternator so if it's even just marginal, replace it with your new one. Do a search for "alternator" using the button in the upper right corner of this screen. Lots of tips there.

If you decide to have it professionally replaced, you're in the best place in the world to have your Q serviced - check out T3 automotive on S. Cobb. If you buy a new factory alternator, get a huge discount from Infiniti of Scottsdale (http://www.infinitipartsusa.com).

P.S. You might also search for "Timing Chain Guides" and "Transmission Cooler" for some other very important Gen. 1 Q issues.
