hey there follow j30 owners, i gotta lil situation for u.

i am driving along in the city n i notice my bat, headlights n brake lights come on. my first reaction was wat da hell.......they were doin that blinking dance. well i know that when those combination of lights come on it is the altenator. so i did the lil test......disconnecting the alt while the car is on and kaput....yes the car goes off. so i am asuming that it is the alternator. two reasons why i am posting this is too make sure u guys know something i dont about the j30, meaning, could it be something else and to get instructions on how to replace. it looks pretty straight foward. two bolts and the belt.

second thing is.....i have replaced spark plugs, air filter, cleaned MAF and ran seafoam in the tank and still i am getting poor gas milage. wat gives? last thing i know to change are the O2 sensors. after that then wat?

last, i know u guys always say always use OEM so i wanted to know wat OEM altenator and O2 sensor is. BECK/ARNLEY?DENSO?BOSCH?

thankz!

I know everyone says that about the alternator (get OEM) but I'm at about 2 years on my Advance Auto alternator at almost half the price of OEM with no problems at all.

What is "poor gas mileage" to you?

sparksplug.com priced the right at like 80 and the other like a couple hundred.

i know found some denso's for like 50$ on rockauto.com

and poor gas milage is 13-14 mpg.

i think i will go get that alt then......any tips on putting it in?

I used the universal NGK at $29.95 each you just splice the new wires to your old connector .

Other then laying on your back the alternator change was similar to most.

changing this alt is no fun........!

i got it out after several hours of beinv under the cramped car.i was wondering thoiugh about this metal plate that was attatched to the back of the alt. how do u put that thng back on......? its attatched to wires surrounded by a blk plastic piece. does this really need to be put back on the alt?i mean really? those two miniture screws are ridiculously small.....

I actually went through the top to get the alternator. If it doesn't budge after you have taken out the bolts, take a hammer to it. Mine was really reluctant to go anywhere.

how did u go through the top? what did u take out, move?i tried the top but i can barely fit my arm down there.......

but i can get to from the bottom.......its puttin on these two tiny screws that is gettin to me. its like there is this black plastic piece covering up some wire that is in the way. and i cant see how to move around them.

WhoW!!!

finally done.........actually done last friday but didnt get time to post. yes that was a biatch to do, but now that i know how to do it, it should be alot easier next time around, and i am truly hoping there will not be a next time around. well i actually did it minus one of those small screws that hold up the metal plate....lol. just couldnt squeeze that lil sucker through there but i got the other one..........that i was excited about. but all in all, it was cool..........nissan really does leave just enough room to work with.

i gotta question for u though....i may change my O2 sensor soon so um........which size wrench do i need? and is it easier goin through the top or bottom?

thankz

I had almost everything out of the engine bay except the motor itself.

If I remember right you may want to try the o2 sensors from the bottom, either way you will be short on space.

Buy an O2 sensor socket about $10 at auto zone and some PB Blaster They will make the Job much easier. lightly saturate the threads 1/2 hour or more before you start
