If someone were (in California) to acquire an S15 chassis, with a blown motor, they're not allowed to throw in a KA24DE (out of say, an S13) and pass smog due to this clause in the Cali EPA Kit Cars policy...

The production, sale and importation of automotive bodies alone (i.e., no chassis, engine or transmission) are not regulated by EPA since such units are not considered "motor vehicles" under the Clean Air Act. EPA form 3520-1 is not required for imported automotive bodies. A motor vehicle from which the engine has been removed is still a motor vehicle and is not considered a body.

However, if you can add all the extra emmissions bs that they require you to have such as...

PCV - positive crankcase ventilation ACL - air cleaner (thermostatic air cleaner) AIS - secondary air injection EGR - exhaust gas recirculation EVAP - evaporative emission CAT - catalytic convertor SPK - spark control FR - fillpipe restrictor O2S - oxygen sensor

(Took from a FAQ about EPA standards for texas, but I would assume the requirements would be similar)

But even if you have these things, you cannot legalize an SR20DET for road use it appears? Evidently the vehicle has to be "certified" or something? Anyone know much about this? Trying to find some sort of loophole which would allow me to have a S15 for road use, were I to ever get the money ;)

That's the rumor, but for now, it's only a rumor.

There's been Silvia sightings at Motorex but it's not clear whether they are in the process of being certified or just for off-road use. Can't dig up anything concrete.

I hate to be pessimistic, because I would love to see the S15 in the States, but given the time and expense it took to get the Skyline in, I don't think Motorex is going to tackle another car for a while. We're probably more likely to see an S16 in the States before we see an S15.
