Hmm! I've been driving for 40+ years and have yet to hit a deer (or any other animal for that matter). I suppose if I'd had Deer Whistles mounted, I could claim that these things really work but I don't so the jury is still out for me.
I truly believe the biggest reason for animal collisions at night is people "Over Driving" their headlights. Also, some vehicles JUST have rotten headlights. I tend to test drive all potential vehicles at night to make sure the lighting systems are commendable. If you want to see really bad headlights, test drive a Ford Fusion at night. The HiBeams are great, but the Lo Beams (which we use about 95% of the time) are just plain scarry. A close inspection of those lights shows that the bulbs are recessed very deeply into the reflector which pretty much precludes ANY light escaping from the sides to help illuminate potential roadkill.
