Almost impossible to reverse... what could be causing this problem?

Sometime after I had my swap done on my '89 240sx, I can't seem to reverse properly. It seems like the e-brake is on the whole time. Whenever I step on the gas gently, there's a heavy grinding (not so much as to the noise but the feeling) in the back axle area. Now, my left rear shock seems blown. the rear driver side sags more than that of the passenger.

Any ideas?

So, it's less of a grinding and more of a shuddering in the rear?

does the shifter engage in reverse easily?

one possible problem might be a worn ring and pinion gear. In reverse, the ring and pinion are using the angled surfaces on the ring gear (which is why it makes a slight whine in reverse). So if there's a bit of play on that surface, it could account for your weird grinding.

For me atleast I know that's what it is it sometimes does not like to shift into reverse... and it's like a geeeerrr moan with a little shutter to the car.. I need to do a clutch job.

try changing the transmission fluid.

isnt the reverse whine comes from the spur gear which most all reverse gears are?

neways my welded diff whinned a lot when it was new (not reverse normal highway speeds). i was worried that the ring&pinion endplay/backlash and toe prints were off. but im to lazy to check so my just waiting for it to explode but it has quite down a bit though. hahah sidetrack ranting.

if its in neutral, somthing is keeping the car from rolling (brakes). check yours closely and look at the slide pins...make sure the caliper isnt binding and causing the outside pad to hold against the rotor.
