Seems pretty nifty, but I bet they get chewed up by plows.

They need to make it with some kind of organic chemical reaction paint instead.

Would certainly be nice in rural areas where decent lighting is not just limited but often impossible.

The cynic in me says:
The US can barely PAVE a road correctly, nevermind making roads "smart." I'd much, much, MUCH rather see the US adopt autobahn standards of construction before farting around with "smart" crap.

I agree, but really it all comes down to cost.
Like, if it's only an extra $50 per mile to put this stuff down as opposed to regular paint, I'm all for it. Like the article says, it SHOULD pay for itself after a while of not having to pay for street lights (electric bill + maintenance, etc).

After you figure labor into it, $50 per mile is completely unrealistic. I'm with MoD, I would rather they put better roads down before going high-tech with fancy paint or whatnot... it would be like polishing a turd.

Seems like a cool idea. It's like any energy saving concept though. There is no cure-all. The idea's will have to be suited to the environment that they will be exposed to.

I am satisfied with the relationship between roads and taxes that we pay systematically. After seven years from the first post here, I think that authorities improved our roads.
