Your intelligence is showing again. The problem with photopost was a coding issue which allowed open queries to scan the whole database, thus reporting 99,999 matches as it ramped up CPU utilization and hung the server. This had nothing to do with some stupid .jpg watermark that someone put up.

As far as forum software, Honda-Tech and Vortex are the #1 and #2 auto-related forums and both use ZF.

Do you ever have anything decent to say about anything other than beating your own drum to support your huge ego?
Im confused, why would the error talk about the watermark, if it had something to do with the CPU utilization?

If it hung the server up, wouldn't the website go down? Or is "gallery" on its own seperate server?

all i know is that since switching over to zero forum the search function is basicly worthless, i really wish it was more like vB.

the recent/archived thing kinda sucks, how old are posts before they are "archived"?

and soem of the suggestions glitch made would be nice. specificly searching functions.

P.S. you guys seemd to be comming down pretty hard on GEO.

Yah me and Greg are cool, we just like to pick each other brains.

Yeh thats what I thought, but the database could have been on anohter server.

Look in the multimedia forum in my photo contest finalist thread to see how I solve that problem.

The watermark was a seperate issue and was only giving some people issues. I have no idea about it being a .jpg or anything else since that was not my doing. Regardless, what was causing the issues was what I mentioned before. Photopost shares a server that has some of the forum software. Moving it to another server would have simply moved the problem somewhere else. Hosting photopost on a dedicated server is a bit too expensive.

The options would be to leave it on a "forum" server and bring NICO to its knees or move it to the ad server, thus bringing the forum to its knees. Neither are good solutions to software that is causing problems.

GEO wrote:But you should seriously dump ZEROFORUMS and upgrade to a better software that is used more often and proven to work with larger communities. Who cares if the top auto sites use ZF, it's an inferior forum software.
Honda-Tech has four times the members as Nico, and they manage fine w/ ZF. It will take a while before Nico catches up w/ honda members. ZF seems to be working great...

on the same note, who cares if more people use a particular software over another? Does that make it any better? More people use windows than linux... More people drive Civics than 240's... More guys on internet forums have sex w/ themselves than w/ a real girl...

Sure, VB and whatnot may have more bells and whistles for the average user... however, also note the average user can barely even use the SEARCH button correctly, which is available on all forums...

Whether or not nico is on VB, ZeroForum, or a freaking maiing list is not what makes it great or not great. It's the people and their willingness to help and improve the community (for the most part).

The photopost thing does suck. I liked it for the most part, and the free part is great too. I'm using zoints & my own web server right now, which is enough to handle the low to moderate amount of bandwidth from images I generate in my posts.

For now, zoints is a great free alternative. iServe is a pretty decent paid alternative - although I prefer paying just $100 a year and getting my own site w/ tons of space & bandwidth for my random experiments, hee hee.

The only foreseeable (but also easily fixed) problem w/ using iServe or non-nico managed sites is for the purposes of archiving/article handling. If someone stops using iServe, I would imagine all the pictures disappear. If anything happens to zoints or whatnot, images disappear or become unavailable for a while (like in photopost's case).

So a simple solution to that, if this hasn't already been discussed by the mods, would be to copy images for any articles directly onto the nico server so that it doesn't get lost.

And since we are on this topic, I would have liked private messaging to be reenabled, hee hee. Sometimes a lil easier than coordinating thru aim, but faster than email for me personally and easier to sort thru & organize.

Q to the V -

If someone stops paying for iServe, the pics remain. Permanently. That was one of our criteria.

Same with Zoints, altho that's free. The rate Z is growing, it'll be a cold day in hell before it goes away.

PM's... We've been over that. Silly to take 6 steps for a process that should only take 2. There's other reasons, but that's the biggest....

Bump.

Does anyone know when the gallery will be viewable again? I'd really like to access some pictures. Anyone else in the same boat?

Thanks!

Had I known the gallery would crap out, I would have downloaded all my pics to my computer. All the pics I've got on there are from the computer at work. Our IT guy deleted everyones "my photos" folders without telling anyone he was going to do so. Lost all my photos.

And options that I like on VB more...

How bout a tiny little icon next to the threads that shows when you have posted in that thread or not?

# of viewers in each forum?

# of views to a posted thread. I really like this one, I like to see how many people view it, but don't respond.

I think if more people showed their agreement, solving this issue would be more of a priority.

I'm wondering if we can get the gallery turned on few hours just to copy our pictures to our harddrives.... I don't think it would make NICO crash. Can an administrator explain why this would not work?

Quick reply in a separate window is annoying as hell in the age of tabbed browsing. With vB, you post in the quick reply box at the bottom and it appends (live) to the bottom of the thread instead of reloading the whole page.

NICO's forum organization is good, except having individual car sections + online mechanic is redundant.

The search is weaksauce.

Zoints and MySpace are both lame. Just because 14 year olds with webcams turned MySpace into a huge site, doesn't mean its any good or worth copying.

If someone really wanted to reach me, they'd use [email protected].

Most importantly, the search blows. We get pissed at newbies for not searching, but most of them already did.

I think it sucks that we can't access the pics from photohost anymore.

Like many others, I had pics that I DL on photohost that I deleted off my computer.. especially all the ones on my work computer.

Found another potentially reliable and fast photo hoster for free:

http://picasaweb.google.com/

Free 250MB for anyone w/ a gmail acct - can get up to 6GB if you pay extra. zoints was down on me for a few hours the other day, and this one seems to have better organization.

Ok Greg. I have a several things I'd like to ask about/mention:

First, kudos for finding such a cool image hosting program, it's nice and clean (from what I can tell) and easy to use.

However, I've been searching hi-and-low for a good photo gallery to host my work. Only problem that I have with I-Serve is that it appears there isn't a yearly subscription plan, and more importantly the capacity is limited. Some of my images from ViR/NicoFest are a few mb's a piece and not having to resize my pics before uploading is a huge relief on the workload.

So what's up with that?

I'm pretty much set on going with SmugMug's professional photo account (although i'm no professional) just because their capacity is unlimited (plus tons of security features and the ability to sell prints to prospective buyers)but I can't get over the initial cost of $149 a year.

Hey Gab, that software looks awesome but how does it work exactly? Is it something you integrate into your already existing website?

Chris, sorry I missed this. I think we can configure an account that will help you there....
