I came back home from college about 2 weeks ago. I hadn't started my car in 8 months, so I had to jump start it. It started good, a little white smoke came out the exhaust for a few minutes but then it was driving fine. I turned it off and the next day I went to start it and the battery was dead again. It was one from walmart and it was still under warranty so i exchanged it for a new one. I put that one in and the car then started fine and it would run fine just like it did before I left for college. I drove it for a whole week and the car was completely normal and running good.

Then, a few days ago, I went to autozone and bought some seafoam. Still in the parking lot, I poured 1/3 of the can in my gas tank (that was probably a little too much because my gas tank was only half way full). I drove the car home (a 15 minute drive) and it ran completly normal. I parked it on my driveway. Then about 5 hours later I needed to drive somewhere, but the car wouldnt start.

I don't think its related to the seafoam because the car wont crank at all. The starter doesnt click. If I had contaminated the fuel the car would at least try to start, right? So I thought i had a bad battery again, but I tried jump starting it with my other car and it still wouldnt even try to start. Im pretty sure the battery is good. All the interior and dash lights go on but the starter isnt working. Ive had bad starters before in other cars and i dont think thats the problem.

You know how s13s have that switch in the clutch that wont allow the car to start unless u have the clutch pedal depressed? Thats what it feels like though i did have the clutch depressed. Is it just that switch that is bad or could it be something worse?

ha! i had this same problem. go get yourself one of the little rubber grommets that fits in the clutch pedal. might as well get the ones for the brake pedal too. it cost me all of about $2 and they are cool translucent candy green plugs.

to test it though, reach under the dash on the left side of the driver's footwell and press the switch with your hand. have it in neutral of course. see if she will start. i actually kind of like it, because its really a good theft deterrent. i understand it puts less stress on the drivetrain when you start it in neutral with the clutch out too.

I know one thing you can do. Turn the ignition switch to the on position. Make sure the car is in neutral. Where your starter is take that black single wire off the starter solenoid and take a screwdriver and jump the solenoid to the other connection where the battery cable goes on the starter.

So if it starts that way, you can rule out the starter at least. So it's either got to be the clutch switch or the ignition switch. Hope this helps.
