hey guys my name is nick, i live in cali, drive a 2000 civic si. and let me tell you. i want an sr20det so bad that i dream about it even more than my girlfriend. i have been doing a little bit of research on these engines, i have one question. if i were to buy an s13 can i stick an s14 blacktop in it or am i stuck with the s13 redtop? the reason i ask is that the blacktop has 20 more hp than the redtop, something im interested in. or since it is the same motor does it matter? i know the blacktoip has the t28 turbo while the redtop has the t25. will i be able to get the same hp number with the redtop as i will the black? or should i buy and s14 and get an s14 engine? let me know. thanks guys

Yeah that is very noobish (you werent kidding when you said "a little research"), the easiest way to learn would be to read previous posts as this has been covered before.

Anyway:Just because the S14 has 20 more hp doesnt make it a better platform to start from, nearly all the power made in the new SR20DET's was derived from the larger turbos added. If you ever planned on modding an SR then you would probably want an S13 red or black top as they have a few slight advantages over the S14 and S15's. So in short, yes it is very easy for the S13 SR to match the S14 and S15 SR's power.

The S14 comes with vvt which does little to nothing special (from what we hear).

You can cross chassis codes and put any SR (13-15) into any chassis (13-15). Putting an S15 into any other 240SX is difficult luckily you live in Cali where some shops have done it before. Which also means you of course know the engines are illegal.

Any other questions? My name is Nick too, there is another one floating around these boards too. Scary:(

I'm actually not sure if it's feasable to put the s14 SR20 into the S13 chassis... I would guess yes- maybe someone else can confirm that for me? I might be wrong.

As far as the engines though, here's the deal from what Ive read so far: the s14 SR20 has a few differences from the s13 that you should pay attention to rather than the HP difference. It's got a different turbo (as you mentioned), a high port flow design (while many pefer the low port design which is in the earlier s13 engines), and VVT (variable valve timing).

Now, I've read this many, many times through this forum (hint hint-- everyone is gonna tell you to SEARCH... Im just gonna hint at it like this... *hint*), that the S14 will be better for you if you dont plan on upgrading or building the engine much farther than it already is. The VVT will have to be taken off if you decide to do any major work, and that (among other things Im sure) is a major source of it's added horsepower. If you're planning on building your engine, then maybe you should just stick with the s13. Word is (on the forums..... *hint*) it has more potential due to its port design, etc... and you wouldnt be wasting money for the VVT youd be ripping off anyways..

Hope I helped!

ah nick we answered at the same time... and here I am showing off my newfound knowledge on port designs and valve timings! way to sneak under me! ;)

Oh, and I thought the VVT, combined with the different port design, is what made the real difference between the engines... maybe Im wrong though.

No it really should be the turbo. Increase the turbo size and you'll get more out of the engine. From what ive heard in the past Nissan didnt quite master VVT like honda mastered Vtech so there is nothing really special about it. Maybe a few HP, that'd give someone who has it something to do on Dyno days.

n00b: It really depends one what you want to do with the motor. if you want to keep it stock, then by all means get the S14 blacktop, and YES YOU CAN PUT IT IN THE s13 chasis, some even say its easier... But if you plan to do any sort of mods to the motor i'd have to say your wasting your money on buying the S14. you get nothing thats really worth while.

and before you ask anything else, try and search first...this has been a friendly reminder of the search function...you may proceed.
