DRTFA...yet, but I am disturbed by the way local and state government (where I live, and I'm betting elsewhere too) has made law-enforcement a way to pad public coffers.

We all know how well algorithms work in GPS devices, now don't we. Let's all put our faith and trust in the holy all-knowing math.

“Even though your light might be green, it may recommend you not go, because there are people behaving badly that you may not be aware of.”
I'm pretty much not okay with that at all. Stopping at a green light is just as dangerous as running a red light.

I'll make my own recommendations, thank you very much. What if the "algorithm" is wrong? Like Chris said, you're sitting there like an idiot at a green light...

If some a$$ is still dawdling in the intersection once my light goes green, he's gonna get buzzed.

How about we just make the fine for running a red light $1000 for the first offense, and a mandatory 30-day suspension of your license for the 2nd offense? That'll make people think twice about being selfish.

As a (sort-of) side note, when local police districts up here want to boost their revenues, they have about 6 prowlers and a tech sit at a busy intersection and deliberately mess with the light pattern so that instead of the usual 3 to 5 second yellow light (giving people who entered the intersection just before it turned yellow a chance to get across before it turns red) the yellow instead stays on only for a second or less. Then they bust anyone unlucky enough to get caught in the intersection at the time. The drivers are in no way at fault, but they have the traffic cameras there to support the insinuation that the driver was not 75% across the intersection when the light turned red. I have witnessed this happen with my own eyes.

Yeah, but the law has nothing to do with "being in the intersection", it's all about where your front tires are in relation to the last white intersection line when the light turns red... I've been through it before with a local overachieving cop...

^ Dave, you got a hardbody?
If all this algorithm does is calculate that a car still going 40mph when it's 10 feet from the intersection is not gonna stop, I'll operate under the assumption that I would notice the red light runner myself. This might be a good idea at a blind intersection though.

Not true.

Every municipality I know of has laws on the books that define "in the intersection" as a portion of the vehicle being over the invisible prolongations of the lateral curb lines or, if none, then the lateral boundary lines.

< Former accident investigator.

With that said, I've always made it a habit to slow on a yellow. With AZ being home to 6 of the 10 deadliest intersections in the US (at least in 1996), it's simply not worth it. :nono:
