Not true.
Every municipality I know of has laws on the books that define "in the intersection" as a portion of the vehicle being over the invisible prolongations of the lateral curb lines or, if none, then the lateral boundary lines.

With that said, I've always made it a habit to slow on a yellow. With AZ being home to 6 of the 10 deadliest intersections in the US (at least in 1996), it's simply not worth it.
