Your next opportunity to see road racing or lapping in NM is upcoming in mmid October. SouthWest MotorSport is an Albuquerque road racing club now working our 6th year of fun and safe road racing. Most events are held at Sandia Motor Speedway's 14 turn, 1.65 mile road course.
Events include a Saturday High Performance Driving School group. Great for starting drivers or those needing to polish skills. Both street and race cars in this group so safety is foremost. Passing on front and back straight only with wave of overtaken driver. We aim for a 1 to 1 instructor to student ratio. Instructors usually ride with student for immediate feedback. Students typically see top speeds of under 100 and lap times in the 1:45 area depending upon car and driver abilities and desires.
In addition to the student group, on track run groups are: open wheel, vintage race prep, lapping, and contemporary race prep. The club web site details classes and other rules. SWMS is a "gentlemens" race club and operates on the 13 point rule - trading paint is frowned upon! Safety is a key word.
All marques are welcome and invited. Last month's event included everything from go karts (separate run group) to very quick F2000's with about 30 entrants from the Phoenix Auto Sport club. Email me for details on long distance entry discounts. If you're from Colorado or that general direction and want a night in Taos on the way here or back, let me know and I'll sharpen the pencil for rates in Taos at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.
Spectators are welcome at SWMS events. We require everyone entering the track to sign a waiver. We are sponsoring the Cody Unser First Step Foundation and welcome folks to make a donation whether they go to school, race, work, or watch. Those who donate at least $100 will get a free night at the inn above named.
As with all club events, workers are always welcome. If you know anyone in the ABQ area, see you mid October. That date is the last weekend of the Interantional Balloon Fest...book a room early if you plan to attend.
